I lived and surfed Oahu for a few years in the 90's. We use to body surf Makapuu, and I can remember my friends getting high with the lifeguard as 2 tourist scuba divers were trying to get out of the beachbreak unsuccessfully . He sat and watched as the male was trying to pull the woman up the sandy slope over and over as she got knocked down. Unbelievable.

Yes the guy is a dick, but his theories are no more inflammatory than any burnout pro wrestler. He's just scratching for a bit of free publicity. In this case of this video, and in consideration of several alleged events on the North Shore over the last few years, this video poses some interesting questions for the WSL.
Perhaps the WSL will just choose to ignore him (as they seemingly did after Eddie's October video), but in any case this clip was deemed worthy of a mid-season discussion point for the website. Which it seems to be doing reasonably well!

Strange remarks from Mr. Rothman.
I thought there was enough reporting to shown that the ASP moved away from having more events in Hawaii because of Mr Rothman's community group.
Fred Hemmings comments in court are relevant.
"Giving evidence in July last year (1987) Mr Fred Hemmings, a member of Hawaii's State legislature and a former world champion surfer, called the Black Shorts"domestic terrorists".
Hemmings, who organisers surfing contests on the North Shore, claimed that the gang demanded that it be paid to provide "security" at the contests.
Life guards from other parts of the island ran competitions for much less, but they refused to work at North Shore events because they were afraid of Rothman and his group, Hemmings said.
"I don't want to hire a vigilante terrorist organisation on the North Shore," Hemmings told the court. "I hired them because I had no choice."

As for the BWWT , well even when they keep it in cold wind affected spots as opposed to Pristine tropics as a Television coverage issue is more important than good waves . Makua still shows them up even in rubber , I think there is a fair bit of feeling on the rock ATM , regardless of what Eddie says and true islanders reactions . As a whole they will be out to prove something . Not since the Kauai boys took over has there been someone to " carry the torch " so to speak . Could Makua turn out to be the saviour . Either way , I'm wit Stu you'd want to be there to hear the victory speech .

The people at GrindTV have attempted to decode Mr Rothman's request.
They reckon Mr Rothman is proposing a $50,000 lie detector challenge to the WSL and its key personnel including Chief Executive Paul Speaker, Hawaii regional head Randy Rarick and Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer Graham Stapleberg to answer a range of allegations that include:
1) The ASP cut promised funds for the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.
2) The ASP threatened the Hawaiian TV channel Oceanic Surf, telling them not to broadcast events involved with the Da Hui.
3) That Randy Rarick “worked feverishly to kill the Duke Kahanamoku Contest” and “stole a pure Hawaiian old lady’s house for a quarter of the market value.”
4) That Paul Speaker “bought the Big Wave World Tour just to bury it.”
Elsewhere, it has been suggested that those named should take up the lie detector challenge, in return for being able to ask Mr Rothman any questions they deemed of interest.

1) When you run your mouth on how much you hate the ASP and say they're doing a shit job, you want get the financial backing. And nor should you, Ripcurl etc always put up the money themselves, because its a valued investment and they get quality promotion of their brand for it. So Da Hui can do the same, promote the brand yourself don't expect the ASP to do it. The Da Hui shoot out is not apart of the ASP, its a local Hawaiian event, not for the pro circuit. So why should the WSL put up their money and Samsung's money for that event.
2) If the ASP and Oceanic Surf channel have a deal for the rights to broadcast the ASP's product then Oceanic surf shouldn't show/promote another surf contest that isn't apart of the ASP. That's business Eddie. No different then the deals the NFL and NBA do with ESPN and ABC etc.
3) Load of shit, just your ego and opinion. And I bet if you were looking to buy a new house you would take a bargain if you could get it, anyone would.
3) How is the BWWT going to get buried? Its getting more promotion and money then ever before. And Billabong use to own it, which are one of the big money hungry Corporation who you rant about that are ruining surfing.

I thought there was enough reporting to shown that the ASP moved away from having more events in Hawaii because of Mr Rothman's community group.
Fred Hemmings comments in court are relevant.
"Giving evidence in July last year (1987) Mr Fred Hemmings, a member of Hawaii's State legislature and a former world champion surfer, called the Black Shorts"domestic terrorists".
Hemmings, who organisers surfing contests on the North Shore, claimed that the gang demanded that it be paid to provide "security" at the contests.
Life guards from other parts of the island ran competitions for much less, but they refused to work at North Shore events because they were afraid of Rothman and his group, Hemmings said.
"I don't want to hire a vigilante terrorist organisation on the North Shore," Hemmings told the court. "I hired them because I had no choice."

As for the BWWT , well even when they keep it in cold wind affected spots as opposed to Pristine tropics as a Television coverage issue is more important than good waves . Makua still shows them up even in rubber , I think there is a fair bit of feeling on the rock ATM , regardless of what Eddie says and true islanders reactions . As a whole they will be out to prove something . Not since the Kauai boys took over has there been someone to " carry the torch " so to speak . Could Makua turn out to be the saviour . Either way , I'm wit Stu you'd want to be there to hear the victory speech .

The people at GrindTV have attempted to decode Mr Rothman's request.
They reckon Mr Rothman is proposing a $50,000 lie detector challenge to the WSL and its key personnel including Chief Executive Paul Speaker, Hawaii regional head Randy Rarick and Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer Graham Stapleberg to answer a range of allegations that include:
1) The ASP cut promised funds for the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout.
2) The ASP threatened the Hawaiian TV channel Oceanic Surf, telling them not to broadcast events involved with the Da Hui.
3) That Randy Rarick “worked feverishly to kill the Duke Kahanamoku Contest” and “stole a pure Hawaiian old lady’s house for a quarter of the market value.”
4) That Paul Speaker “bought the Big Wave World Tour just to bury it.”
Elsewhere, it has been suggested that those named should take up the lie detector challenge, in return for being able to ask Mr Rothman any questions they deemed of interest.

Well Eddie, he's the truth to your questions.
1) When you run your mouth on how much you hate the ASP and say they're doing a shit job, you want get the financial backing. And nor should you, Ripcurl etc always put up the money themselves, because its a valued investment and they get quality promotion of their brand for it. So Da Hui can do the same, promote the brand yourself don't expect the ASP to do it. The Da Hui shoot out is not apart of the ASP, its a local Hawaiian event, not for the pro circuit. So why should the WSL put up their money and Samsung's money for that event.
2) If the ASP and Oceanic Surf channel have a deal for the rights to broadcast the ASP's product then Oceanic surf shouldn't show/promote another surf contest that isn't apart of the ASP. That's business Eddie. No different then the deals the NFL and NBA do with ESPN and ABC etc.
3) Load of shit, just your ego and opinion. And I bet if you were looking to buy a new house you would take a bargain if you could get it, anyone would.
3) How is the BWWT going to get buried? Its getting more promotion and money then ever before. And Billabong use to own it, which are one of the big money hungry Corporation who you rant about that are ruining surfing.
P.S. If you're so against the WSL then why is your son competing, why doesn't he just do the free surf thing. Will he donate his winnings to local competitions and surf industries, I think not.

He is a good surfer. A goofyfoot. Back 30 or so years ago, he was one of the Pipeline crew. Back then, he was one of those no-name locals who ruled the break and surfed it well. Those days are gone, but he can still surf well for an old bloke.

Imagine if your local beaches were swamped with everyone from world champs , every wanna be pro surfer on the planet right thru to absolute utter fuckwits ( and fuckwit world champs and pro surfers very often) who have been surfing all year elsewhere in the world while you suffer thru another flat Hawaiian summer and as soon as the surf finally arrives so do above mentioned and the contests taking up your surf spots on the best days of the season, i am sure you would be stoked? Sure Eddie may not be the smoothest ambassador or a "pure Hawaiian" as seems to be your issue (were you born on your"local" beach that you have lives at since you were 16?) but without him and others like him Hawaii would be way more fucked up than it is already.
