Adam Robertson, Kandooma - video

Swellnet Dispatch

"It’s a really nice wave, not too shallow or sharp in comparison to say the Mentawais or somewhere like that, but it still has a very Indo-type feel where you can take off and get a barrel from start to finish." So said Adam Robertson following a short stay at Kandooma in the Maldives for Surfing Victoria. While in the Maldives he only surfed the one wave. "I found it hard to walk away when there were barrelling waves breaking right in front of my eyes," said Robbo.

After watching the first and last waves of this vid Robbo's decision seems like a sound one.

Any chance you could provide some dates for when this footage was taken please. I'd like to go through the swell archives and compare notes. Thanks.

Hey Don, a quick google search says he was there for a "surfers in suits" thing which ran between 13/06-20/06.

And the swell archives show a good quality 3-4ft SE swell up there around then, peaking around Tues 17th which could equate to some of the bigger waves shown around that time?

Don we were there 24-31 May and is was unsurfable 1ft the whole time. Apparently had been like that two weeks prior too. Where are you getting your f/c from? Surfline seems rubbish for K-DOOMa....looks like Robbo got very lucky

Feck me, I don't think I've ever seen a forecast that bad for the Maldives at the end of May. Swell archives for your dates show nothing above 1.8ft@ 8 sec from the SE for the entire week.

I use MSW for the quick swell archives.

I got back from Kandooma on the 4th May and we had swell for the whole week prior. The Saturday that I arrived it was at least as big as in the video and was that size for two days. It did start to die for the remaining days but was very surfable for the whole week, and was building as I was leaving. Looks like I was lucky as I thought that it was normal for this time of the year. Good enough that I have booked again for next year already.

Yep based on the archives looks like you guys got similar swell, perhaps a touch smaller than the Tues Adam's peaked?

"Judges analyze the following major elements when scoring a ride:
- Commitment and degree of difficulty
- Innovative and progressive manoeuvres
- Combination of major manoeuvres
- Variety of manoeuvres
- Speed, power and flow"

Three barrels ain't a straight flush.

And Jordy is still suffering the bad karma.

He should quit the Tour for shame. For shame.

Yeh, he should have instead stormed up the steps at Winki screaming, "I'm not worthy!", at the judges.

Ive surfed Kandoooma for the last 8 years during every month of the season from April to October and the two last weeks in May were as bad as i' ve seen in years. it was bad everywhere, so baconeater i think you were unlucky not that Robbo was lucky. That is the nature of this great sport of ours though.

I'd agree with that comment JG, as I said it's unheard of for the Maldives to be flat in late May for a week!!!

So can anyone tell me if Kandooma is a good place to go with the family (2 x kids, 7 & 8)?

Dates are correct. We were there with him. I chattted to him on the session where he snapped that board. Had an old school 'Energy' (as in Simon Anderson) sticker on it which I thought was cool. I didnt know who he was but we speculated he had to be WQS standard at least. He was a notch above averyone else in the water. Scored an epic swell. Magicseaweed gave it 3 stars and 2-3 foot. 12 sec period. It was bigger than 2-3 foot

Hey Arnie, JG should probably have declared that he was paid by the perfect wave to travel to Kandooma and surf (including a seaplane charter)

btw yes Kandooma did appear pretty kid friendly, albeit with a pretty small kids club ...although the island has a strange mix of approx. 20% Aussies surf family's and 80% Chinese honeymooners

Sheesh , just got a quote for Kandooma in Sept - must take 2 x Beach Villas because family Villa n/a = $10K for 7 nights (inc flights & B'fast) + you have to buy food and drink packages for adults.
Pretty exy for 1 week!!

$1400 a day for what is essentially a 3.5* resort.....and then throw in another $150 a day for lunch/dinner and drinks.....a small swell window.......doesn't sound like good value for money to me. Heard of a little island called Bali - its pumping there at the moment.
