Skin Cancer

Was chatting with "blowin" about the silent killer and deformer of surfers..... Not sharks, not fin chops.... The big C..... Yeah, blowin, it's a fuckn hard pill to swallow..... Now sometimes when I feel the sting of the sun on my skin, the feeling I loved for years, anxiety levels raise.... A simple pimple, an insect bite can put you into a mild panic..... I dream of backlit east coast waves..... But I am assigned to surf west facing coasts in the early morning, hiding like a vampire..... It fuckn sux mate...... Let be be a lesson to all...... Cover up you fuckn idiots.....

Photo 1 is of the actual cancers on the gum line of my lip...... Photo 2 is after one week on aldara treatment, which is basically a type of chemo poison.... photo 3 is after 3 weeks........ Hell on earth..... For 6 weeks.... So sick.... Gut cramps from aldara cream seeping down my throat..... Glands on neck rashed up..... Smoothies the only thing I could delicately slurp...... Then another 2 months before knowing whether it worked..... Thank god it did.... Or snip..... Lip amputation..... Even after 4 years, my lip is tender.... I have to sip hot drinks through a straw........ Zinc up....... Cover up.... Wear a hat if it's pumping..... For fucks sake..... Now, the melanoma on my back?.... Well there's another mightmare.... Must be a tough old dog, cos I'm still fuckn here.........

Great idea for a thread Sheepdog. To be honest those couple of paragraphs and a few photos have had a bigger impact on me than a decade of slip, slop , slap propaganda . I actually am one of those idiots that still revels in the feeling of sun on my skin.

I smother zinc on my face but only cause that's where I burn. I'll surf without a shirt on for hours.

I think it was the bit about dreaming of backlit waves and the anxiety about pimples, nah it was all of it, that shit is full on. Your the only surfer I've talked to that's had melanoma strange as it may sound,
Seems a lot less abstract when someone that has the same innocent desire as yourself to play in the sea has to become a sun dodging vampire.

What's the story mate, will you ever get the all clear and be able to let the guard down a bit ?

SD, after that first photo, I had one reoccurring like, same position on the lip, for about 8months.
Went to the Doc got it cut out straight away. 26mm x 15mm wide, 'V shape'
Went to pathologist, no sign of cancer.

Why Aldara mate......? For warts....?

Fucken hell man, that's hard core...I've re-posted the link to your story on a couple of other sites, not surfing but radio control forums. I've seen too many blokes standing around all day under a red hot sun with no protection, faces getting fried to a crisp. They do this weekend after weekend without a thought to the possible damage being done. Hopefully this will give some of em a wake up call.

Blowin, welly, trip.... Cheers dudes.... It's a life sentence, blowin...... Unless medical advancements find a vaccine of some sort.... If you haven't met other surfers that have had cancer, give it time..... You will.. I take it you are not in your 40s..... My doc' said that it "generally" takes about 20 years after the initial severe sunburn for skin cancer to surface...... That's a very broad rule though..... Made sense to me, mid 30s was when shit started to happen..... I have to go in every 3 months for a full body checkup...... Vigilance...... Me mate "spart" just had one cut out of his inner ear lobe, and another "blonde coolum guy", scott, had a melanoma on his hairline, upper left forhead.... Now wears a cap everywhere cos' it looks like he has been scalped.... Horrid..... But alive...

Welly , Beats me why you doc didn't perform a punch biopsy before chopping a chunk out.... Like a little hole punch ( had dozens of them), 1 stitch, if comes back negative, no real harm done.....
1st photo you can still see the holes from the biopsy punch... Came back fuckn positive..... Grim times....

Trip, cool man.... If just one person goes "holy shit I'm putting zinc on" from you sharing my story, then that's awesome.... :)

Good mate of mine was misdiagnosed 20 yrs ago, as a 20 yr old with melanoma. When they finally realised they'd got it wrong it was almost a death sentence, pulled through by the skin of his teeth. He ended up with a large payout cause of the fuckup, small consolation as he lives an existance of constant bodily disrepair.

Man, I gotta say how dissapointed I am with some humans. One site I posted on, first reply was along the lines of "sure it's not herpes". How the fuck could anyone read ya story, see your photos and think that ya playing us?

Tripper.... Karma will sortem out lol..... Mate, if it was herpes, could you imagine the chick I caught it off....... Jeezuz!!!!!! Sorry to hear about your mate. Not good, man..... I hope he has some form of enjoyment in his life..... During my battle, A young friend from down the road brought his xbox up here, got me into war games...... Pretty funny.... A 17yo local dude with a bloke in his late 40, with the curtains drawn in the middle of the day, yelling out "got ya covered"!!! "Move, move MOVE!!! YEEESSS!!!!" "Good shot!!"... Wonder what the neighbours thought..... Pretty sus lol......

Wellymon, forgot to cover the aldara.... Google "aldara skin cancer"..... The drug (poison) in Aldara changes the immune system.... Some bright spark years ago must've put some on a bcc cancer, and it worked..... It's actually not meant to be used on the lips, but my dermatologist thought we'd try something radical, otherwise it was goodbye lip......

Sheepdog's picture

Sheepdog Thursday, 17 Apr 2014 at 9:25am

There a basically 3 types of skin cancer..... I've had all 3... I've lost count... probably 16 cut out, 2 aldara treatments, 2 pdt treatments, 3 efudix treatments, and about 40+ cryo'd ( freeze burnt) ..... I know a bit about it now...... ;)
I'll put it in basic terms, because I think the technical way alot of doctors use confuses us surfy types...

Skin has layers, a bit like a sponge cake... You know, a cake base, then some cream, another layer of cake, more cream and some fruit, another layer of cake etc etc..... So if you look at the top layer of the cake - the icing - the skins equivalent is the "superficial" layer... Other layers of the "skin cake" include the "epidermis", the "dermis"......... ......
Now, in skin there a different types of cells that make up the skin, Basal cells, Squamous cells, melanocytes.... Your skin layers aren't just one type of cell.... So........ It depends on what type of cell has gone "rogue", and in what layer, when it comes to dealing with one of the 3 types of cancer.

People think that when they hear "superficial skin cancer", the word "superficial" must mean it is ok..... IT IS NOT OK!!!! I wish doctors would change the word.... Superficial skin cancer is a cancer that has just started on the top layer of skin... If you let it slide, it will penetrate into the deeper layers... Then you could be in for a nasty ride, especially if it is one of your Squamous cells that has "gone rogue".... We'll cover that now.... The 3 cancers;

Melanoma.... Well you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out which cell I mentioned above is linked to melanoma..... "Melanocytes"..... These cells are responsible for your skin colour, your "tan", and clusters of them form moles...... You have one of these cells go rogue on you, and you are in bug fuckn trouble...... BIG FUCKN TROUBLE...... The one I had? A mole on my back started to get itchy, like a sandfly bite.... On one side it had like a 1/4 moon shadow on the unraised skin,,,,, then it had a bit if a "halo", purple and red in colour......... Don't fuck around with it don't doubt..... Just see a doc... These fuckers shoot spores into your bloodstream, and the spores travel and can settle in your vital organs... The fancy word doctors use for these spores spreading through the body is "metastasized"......Some melanomas are so quick, you've got about 3 months to get it dealt with, otherwise we'll see ya in an open casket....

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)- DEADLY!!!!!! They shoot spores too(metastasize)....... Not quite as quick as melanoma..... but you are just as dead......
Can form on the "superficial layer". Don't fuck around.....

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC).... The deformer...... the slow sloooow killer...... 99% of basal cell carcinoma dont shoot spores.... What they do is grow roots..... Solid roots..... So, it's not the spreading spores like melanoma or SCC that gets ya'...... Picture a BCC on your temple...... It's solid roots grow and grow and grow..... They start to put pressure on you skull bone.... The bone and roots start to get pushed into your brain..... As well as this ghastly external ulcer like goitre causing severe pain, your brain is slowly being crushed by your own skull bone and the roots of the cancer..... A horrific slow death.... Leave one on your shoulder, it will eventually push your shoulder bones through your lungs....
If you have a BCC in the superficial layer and are really quick on it, often a simple freeze burn will kill.... Let it go, suffer the consequences.

So, there..... No excuses...... just a simple check up might save you grief...

And Zen, cheers, man....... He has been quiet..... Hope he's ok......

'We all carry cancer cells'

Thats's not correct. We all have genes, and DNA that can cause cancer, by mutating cells.

And no one really knows why genes mutate. Bruce Lipton's work with genes/dna is interesting, but it flies in the face of contemporary science, with all the connotations that means.

Gidday zeno, having seen this, I can't believe I've wasted time listening to the dawg yappin' and callin' about diet, health, fitness, muscles, log chopping, mental states, you name it. Not joking about cancer, I've surfed for close to fifty years, and anyone that knows me knows I don't like sun block. Sometimes I'd surf blacks from dawn to dusk. Bricky and I used to have contests who could stay out all day, regularly. One of my friends is a leading skin cancer specialist, always saying I'll get it, because he did, despite wearing every sun protector ever invented. But then, he was the doctor with the fucked back that my mate fixed also, and according to him, I was supposedly going to be crippled from lifting weights when I was forty. And the 2 dozen eggs a day was going to kill me too. The truth actually is dawg, no one does know why the gene/dna mutates, and causes cancer. You showed enough from the lips down in the photo's for my assessment re health and fitness. Maybe you should be much more interested in fitness, and muscles. Unless you use drugs, muscles only grow and repair optimally when you are thriving.

Uplift. Best you man up..... Your first post was an obvious tongue in cheek jibe about cancer, and the fact that I have had cancer..... Man up, mate..... And now we have you turning a serious conversation about cancer into the "uplift show"..... Not your finest work.....
Firstly, Queensland has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.... Fact.....In Australia, South Australia and Victoria have the lowest rates.....Fact....... I'm not gonna waste my time explaining why this is.. You're a smart chap... I'm sure you know the answer.... If you don't, fuckn think about it during the next 6 cold months when you wear a wettie and face away from a sun that has retreated into the northern sky.....

Secondly, for you to make a sweeping assessment on photo's when someone is undergoing a cancer treatment is ridiculous.... In fact, it's an insult to your own intelligence.....In the previous months before the photos, I had undergone a battle with melanoma, with all it entailed... I was already weakened..... I then was diagnosed with Bcc on my lips and had to undergo aldara therapy.... You can see a marked change from photo 1 to photo 3 as my immune system struggled to deal with the poison/medicine. Note change in skin tone and swollen rashed lymph glands in neck photo 3, all known side effects of aldara.... .....
Next you will be off to the Adelaide hospital telling people on chemo, "gee, I assess that your not fit".... Ummm well derr!!!!!!!

ps - I will check Lester out..... And btw, yeah used to party a bit back in the 80/ early 90s.... But believe it or not, gave up drinking .... gee..... 14 years ago???. New millenium ......yeah... haven't smoked pot for hmmm.. 12 years.... Wasn't a big bong head, except maybe for a period in my early 20s.... Scaled back heaps as I got older, and when they brought in drug driving tests I just stopped.... Still smoke a few rollies.... And drink too much coffee......

You either want to discuss cancer, or you don't. Despite all the theories and speculation, no one knows why genes/dna mutate and cause cancer. Some people get it doing everything supposedly 'right', some don't get it doing everything supposedly 'wrong'. In a way its like eggs, once blamed for sugar's issues. Turned out to be bullshit. Talk about eating eggs, fat and cholesterol, and people with issues in that area cause themselves to be upset. Even those that don't do. Vitamin D defiency has reached epidemic levels. Vitamin D plays a huge role in gene/dna function, and hormone regulation, and its deficiency has been identified with many cancers. The main source of vitamin d production is the sun. Again, no one knows why genes/dna mutate and cause cancer.

And you are right dawg, what you think of me means nothing, what I think of me is what counts.

Have another snort groges.

Sheepio ,
you wanna be careful with the " the suns at a lower azimath in higher lattitudes " description . due to the Ozone hole , Tassie in Winter is one of the worst places for singular burns . thats when it shows it self in between slow flurries ;-) .
For me , pure warmth of climate makes the hours spent in a year with exposed skin higher in places like Qld ....

also its very rare for any surf break in Oz to have a surfer facing the incoming swell and facing direct south ..... Most swells are born out of a little east or west of south , at the most extreme . Not too mention that the sun sets lower ( further south on the horizon in summer ) at higher lattitudes ...

Uplift , clearly you are coming back in the next life as a mere mortal . and most likely , still someones' bitch .

Sheepdog's picture

Sheepdog Friday, 18 Apr 2014 at 9:08am

Gday, southy.. Hope you are well.... Yeah, check my post earlier re' tassie.... tassie actually has a quite high rate of skin cancer re' ozone..... My main point was in Qld, due to its year long warmth , and dry clear winters, skin damage occurs 365 days a year.... Now ad on the fact that the surf generally is at its best in the morning up there , you have to ad on that incredible double whammy of facing directly into the sun and copping the ocean glare as well as the sun itself... It's something the whole east coast gets, actually, including Tassies east coast......Facts are facts.... Qld has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world.... Victoria and S.A rates are lower due to the fact that between late march and october, people start to rug up and cover their skin due to the cold... Full length wetsuits are worn.... Uv index is way down.... S.e, S, Sw, W facing surf spots have no glare directly into the face.... In qld, it's all year mate.... In vicco, you get a six month reprieve.... But Vicco surfers shouldn't take this as a get out of jail card... Even though melanoma rates in Vicco are way lower than Qld, they still are very high on a world scale..... You see alot of "crayfish" on St Kilda beach when it's 41'.......

you wrote......that no-one carries cancer cells, and we all have genes and DNA that carry cancer........its actually the opposite....cancer lies dormant in all of us.....as our body makes defective cells all the time, and that's how tumors are born....

as for causes of cancer.....no-one knows claims uplift, when the facts tell a different story....that environment, diet, stress all contribute significantly to cancer becoming one of the fastest growing diseases on the planet ...........

be careful uplift with makin shit up on cancer as its pretty serious life shit...

So,.not sure you are in "our" club...and the knowledge that goes with treating and beating Mr C.....sheepdog seems to have some very good stats....and would be interesting to see how the Southern states rate of cancer must be increasing because of the hole in the Ozone that gets from Oct > April.........

forecast is lookin better here by the minute , so I've got two days to fit 365 days worth of training into and still do more at my worst than you at your best ... ;-0

Apart from the slip slap slop message there's not much in the way of warning about the dangers of too much sun in Australia. Coming from the UK it's noticeable how many people have bits cut out of them or know someone who has had a scare but all summer people are surfing in just boardies, seems mental to me. Same at work, blokes working in the sun all day shirts off and going that scarlet/purple shade. Obviously making a big deal out of Australia having the highest rate of melanoma in the world doesn't look good in a brochure but by not hammering the message home i think there's a ticking timebomb in the making. Pretty sure Oz banned tanning shops a few months ago, wish UK would do the same, they get hammered there.

A little reoccurring sore on my lip for 8 months, that would go away but come back after being in the sun surfing.....?
Saw a skin specialist from my good doctor who is a professor as well, cut out straight away, 11 stitches, sample straight to pathologist... clear. Get it early get good doctors :)

Oh yeah and had a prostrate examination, physical :) (lucky it was a lady doctor).
Get it done fellas. Simple as.

Welly, when you say "clear", are you saying that you got the "all clear" as in they got it all.... Or are you saying it was clear of cancer, as in it wasn't cancer, and you just endured this torture foe nothing?
