Put some Pics up of your New D.S. shooters Fellas.
Always thought a Big D.S. would suit Shaun Tomson Pink Banana Spray
or the Blue Bottom and Rails with the Rainbow Swirl on the Deck
Incredible amount of rocker.
And three inches thick!
Didn't realise it was all so extreme.
Would allow for a forward stance on the drop and bottom turn but seem to remember Tomson's stance was further back and wider than say Lopez.

7'0 43L .
Santa came early!
@island bay , webby is just waiting on his partners in those fins to send him some stock . I said to him that they looked like medium size and he said yes and even though I’m a large lad that you don’t want fins that are too big in the guns , ok for smaller boards .
Supa- How about a Box of Posca Pens for your Daughter from Santa and let her loose on Decks of those Desert Storms.
Let us know how the boards and fins go, sf. Hoping for some solid swell for you - for everyone!

Small pulse after Boxing Day but I’m going to let the 6’10” cure a bit longer, think I will take the 7’6” out just for a feel of it’s paddle power . We just had 3 days of 40klms south winds and it was a mission paddling back out at dbar.
Fuck what a combo supa, enjoy!

Thanks goofyfoot , hope you guys are getting some swell down there , all the best for xmas and new year .
whoa those fins look very, very nice.
Jelly!
Speaking of the fins, what is the foil on the rears? Single or double?

Over here too :-)

Yeah I don’t keep them much more than a year then give em away to mates that have indo surf schools.
Finally got myself a DS in Webby's xmas sale, after reading this thread a lot over the past year 6'2 stock. (i'm only 66kg so figured it should have enough foam for what I surf in VIC).
Frothing! Hopefully we get some actual waves next year..
Any recommendations for small quad fins?
6'2 -35 lt of Foam - More than enough for your Weight...
Yep! Got one of Webby's personal 6'0 napalms which is awesome at good Winki but the DS is for when i want some more paddle power and those cold paddle winter days in the thick wetsuits. Can't wait to give it a go
gilbert wrote:Any recommendations for small quad fins?
EA quads are recommended in this thread. The rear fin foils are asymmetric.
I have some Rastovich rears I will try. Smaller and with a 50/50 foil.
I also have a Stretch quad set to trial. 50/50 foils in the rear.
Island Bay wrote:Most quad sets for bigger waves have flat-foil rear fins.
This is what I've found on my DS fin travels:
- Don't go too rakey on the front fins. FCS2 Accelerator fronts with small Shapers 80/20 foil rears was good.
- Even better (and this setup works excellently on my 7'6 Spartan too) is Captain Fin McCallum quads. All fins same size, all flat.
- NVS make a nice looking set in G-10 material called Bronn Quad. Would like to try those. But yeah, can't go wrong with EA fibreglass quads.
IB have you got FCS boxes in your DS?
I’m definitely going to get some of those wasabi converters, but will likely also invest in a set of futures for the new DS.
Arrives on the 29th. Too late for that swell. But hopefully set up for some NY cyclone action.

Hey mate.
FCS2 in the 6’10, Futures in the 8’6 and 6’4. Currently set on McCallum quads in the two shorter ones, and NVS Bronn quads in the big beast.
.
IB, that long-period swell is on the way to you, workable this arv with sea breezes. Let us know how ya go!
@IB , I’ve been looking at different fins and was surprised at the fcs nathan florence big wave fins , 50/50 foil on the front fins and 80/20 on the rears . The pyzel padillac fins are 80/20 on the front and 50/50 on the rears . I will definitely not be getting the NF at $400 a set but may have found some used reasonably priced padillac fins. Just wanting to experiment a bit to see what works best . I’m pretty confident the one’s Webby supplied will do the job . Here’s hoping we get a week of decent swell.
DS with FCS plugs
Theres a set of Stretch Quads Mediums on Facey at Emerald beach for $70
Took the 7’6” for a paddle out at rainbow yesterday, just getting a feel for paddling and duck diving it . Haven’t ridden a board of this length for about 10 years, glided into a few . Love the rails on the DS and looking forward to riding this at solid impossible’s and a couple of rights east of Bali. This morning I did the early first light paddle with 100 other guys at snapper on the 6’10” , after 1 hour must have been 200 out stretching to greenmount. I managed 6 waves in 2 hours and really impressed with the board . Rode it as a quad with fcs H4s which worked really well. Frustrating surf though as on 3 different occasions I couldn’t take off as other punters paddling out and no where to go but straight over them if I took off . Amazing the amount of learners out at this hour, dangerous. Swell was smaller than I thought it would be but a few head high sets. Reverse rip running and was really strong yesterday.
Paddle wide, basic etiquette. Still believe a buoy system could be effective in blown out line ups in the future. In some waves paddlers are just putting themselves in harms way (riders way) as a result of lazyness or poor fitness or no idea.
Reckon that once the swell kicks and you're four days deep in a tradeswell marathon you'll be glad for a sweep killer.
Beat me to it Stu..fark yeh
Cam rewind check your Performance Supa....
Is that a DS in the SA WOTD from today? Rails look similar to my 6’10.
Yep!
Excellent
hey FR, had a chance to give those same size front + rear quads a run in yr DS yet?
No, and I actually have the solid fibreglass set with the fronts bigger than the rears.
I didn't realise that until I bought them (sight unseen).
Had them in my 6'1" though and they go insane.
Still running EA quads in DS.
Was that your Pyz2 6’1?
Aye.
Magic whip
haven't had a bad surf on it.
I emailed Wasabi Surf in the USA, they have replied stating that they are no longer selling the adapters.

Hey LT! Googling Desert Storm after a very satisfying New Year's day surf and this thread popped up. Just Me & the Gal out for the first hour, then one other local for another hour and a bit. The biggest waves I've ever surfed locally during the festive season. Glassy, reeling long lefts 5-6ft with 3 or 4 sets I wouldn't want to put a number next to for fear of sounding like a blow-arse.
Derek said he'll buy me a board for Xmas and I already have a pretty fresh three-board quiver of Timmy Pattersons (2 shorties and a step-up @ 6'4" 37lt) so I'm looking to fill a hole in my quiver... Was going to get a 7'6" fun board for the fat slow days on the Point but after pulling back on a couple and just making a couple of free-fall drops I've decided to get a DS and make a return of sorts while I'm able, to the bigger days. Have been riding old skinny weird 90's Guns and even my Mid-length in the past few years. All are not ideal or suited for the occasion. These days at my age I feel I need to be wearing a Tuxedo at the Ball, not old jeans and a T-shirt.
6-10ft range, 49 years on Earth @ 78kg on a good day. Fit (ish} and a capable but not outstanding Surfer. I was thinking of a 7- 7'4 DS.
What lessons have you and the lads here learned for a Newbie buyer since this thread started back in 2015?
Hey Negs, Mads here. Happy New Year, bud.
I reckon you're on the right track with a DS for solid K. They do have solid paddle power, so if you want to keep it more maneuverable I'd go close to 7'0. I'm in Rags now, and if you ever make it up here you're more than welcome to give my 6'10 a go (and my 8'6 too, should the swell come up, hehe).
For reference I'm 59 and get tons of use out of my 6'10.
Cheers
