Australia started really well, but France had obvious superior quality all over the pitch and were in the ascendancy from 15 minutes onwards.
We had no answer for Dembele, Griezmann nor Mbappe. Also, as Kewell pointed out during the broadcast we lacked incisive runners and balls in the final third were non existent (our goal excluded). Considering France were also without Kante and Benzema, it could have been a slaughter.
Compare our set up with the Saudi's in their game against Argentina. The Saudis were really brave, physical and technical, high back line and high press and it paid dividends.
We didn't press for fear of being turned over.
Behind us now, focus on the next game.
You can't just wake up one morning and start playing gegenpress. As with any other tactical philosophy, this one needs a lot of training. First, the selected coach needs to have experience with this approach, and second, the selected players need to fit that tactical style. I don't actually follow the Socceroos or the A league and I don't know anything about this coach or the players on the team. Never heard of any of them and I highly doubt they would be capable of playing high-quality gegenpress.
Also, the Saudis played anti-soccer against Argentina and Argentina could've easily won with a different tactical approach. They pushed the flanks too much and insisted on playing with 2 fairly defensive midfielders against this weak opponent. I didn't really understand that. A creative midfield playmaker could easily break Saudis in that high line. Like this Argentina did way too many mistakes and mistimed passes/runs leading to high wastage. And you can't just expect Messi to play a forward, winger, a 10, and an 8 in the same game, it's ridiculous.

Didn't think the Saudis were 'anti-football', they just out thought Argentina tactically and realised they could cover Argentinas runners by playing a high line. Argentina were actually very vulnerable on the counter.
As for Australia, I think Arnolds doing the best he can with a poor squad, however, sitting back and waiting for the French (with their quality across the park) was a very poor decision. Not enough pressure on the ball (gegenpress or not) but I think (hope) Australia will be more competitive in the next 2 matches

I reckon you nailed it.. there a bunch of players returning from injury and I think some don't get full minutes at club level... not fit enough. Such a shame when the only aspect of the game the socceroos have a chance to win is fitness.
Players need to be in top physical and mental condition to sustain high press for 90mins. If the coach wants to play like that he should only select players who are currently in form and no one else. And don’t forget, there are teams who prefer opponent pressing them so they can push the ball behind the line for fast paced runners. Real Madrid comes to mind with Vini Jr. Catch him if you can kind of thing. I believe the Socceroos had a fear of this happening. Knowing the pace of Mbappe and Dembele on the wing they would be terrified of them running away. There’s no way to catch them if they get a ball behind the defence line.

Like I said - defend deep, give them possession, and counter-attack. You can't outplay them in an open play but they are poor in front of the goal. Denmark is pretty much always a low-scoring affair. One could safely place a bet on < 3 goals in a game like this. This is not a way to win a league but it is a way to get through tournaments like World Cups. Famously, this is how Greece won the Euro Cup in 2004. They played the ugliest defensive football but won 1-0 all the way through quarters, semis, and the finals.

Weirdly, you might actually be onto something. I didn’t watch the game but I just checked the stats etc on Sofascore and I must say that this was a very weird setup by the French. The number of controversies with referring is stunning. Top technology with top resources but still super dodgy. This Japan thing was a joke and that rule is dumb. Spain now avoids a much harder draw (Brazil). Although, those who follow the game regularly would know that Morocco is a top team full of great players who play for top clubs in the world. They just needed a good coach to sync them up. So it might not work out for Spain.
And while this ball was 99% out the rule in offside is completely opposite. Croatia had a penalty overturned because VAR apparently knows where shoulder starts and begins. The player was clearly on side with both feet, they really need to change the rule to feet not freaking hands estimate.
