That's a great question @supa. Was thinking of something similar yesterday.
I can't recall a president that resorted to division of the population. Party politics yes, but never straight out attacks on any every day citizens who didn't support him.
He must have got it out of the playbook of how to be an authoritarian prick, because everytime he's backed into a corner, he just pulls out the division card and attacks those that don't support him.
It's working a treat. A very successful way to continue to yield power and influence without having to ever answer a question with even a skerrick of honesty.

Re: the civil war question, US political polarisation has been intensifying for the last 13 years or so. Similar to the period before 1861; similar but different. I cast my mind to the Harper's Ferry raid and it's not quite that. Lincoln's assassination was after the conflict.

I didn't actually know who Charlie Kirk was, although I'd picked up on the alienation of young men and put up some of the research articles here. So I'm out of touch. Apparently whole schools are going in dressed in suit & tie in places in his honour. For a similar conservative assassination with very politically polarised sides, I think of José Calvo Sotelo, but again it's not a comparable situation as the Spanish were a long way further down the inevitability line at that stage.
