Been following this a bit on a number of podcasts.
Judging Freedom, Dialogue works with their guests and this seems to be the outcome they have been predicting for months.
Europeans can call BS, but without US support it is meaningless. Neo con war that should have been prevented.

Yes it’s a sad state of affairs. Half the populace want a dictator that gives them (their) democracy, the other half want democracy.
I’m so thankful I’m not an American. It’s so far from the leading beacon in western democracy. Only, they can’t see it.

I’ve traveled to the US at least once almost every year for the past 20+ years. Bit of time in the snowfields (CO) in 2002-03. Spent over a year living there in 2008-09 (NC). Been all over the place. Midwest is about the only area I haven’t been. There twice last year (AZ, GA, FL, DC, NY), back once this year already (CA, FL). It’s good to see different places, meet different people, hear different views. Some incredible characters, truly impressive humans. And some complete scumbags.
I genuinely like the US, and Americans, for the most part. When you stop expecting them to be Aussies and get a sense of their (very much varied) perspectives it’s a fascinating place. Much more diverse in almost every way from Australia. But weirdly more culturally homogenous too. I’m always astounded that many of them just seem to want to live in the stereotype / caricature that they were assigned at high school. Sometimes it’s like everyone is just playing their part in a giant Truman show. This is obviously a huge generalisation, but I do share this reflection with my (closer) American friends.
That last trip, a shorter than usual mission in early July, was unsettling. Feels like it’s changed more dramatically in the past 5 years than at any point prior. Even the first Trump presidency felt normal (enough). I couldn’t put my finger on it. I don’t really know what I’m trying to say, except that I have a sense of trepidation about the US and its retreat from the world.
