No shit @guysmiley? That's hectic!
According to Lethal, he was a thug because he was a smaller player and was targeted constantly so he decided to get on the front foot.
But of course he'd say that eh? Typical Hawthorn!!

Leigh is a Chelsea boy, a tough place to grow up in the 60's and 70''s. Sharps, bikers, and the highest proportion of state housed released prisoners in Vic for a good number of decades. Reckon he was a product of his environment, and a bloody good footballer too. Could see him about the place when he visited his mum when she was still around. Hard to judge the past with current norms.
Btw, Baggers went down to the Roos. Sweet.

^^ not buying it @blackers, we all have choices, he was a good footballer who would have been reported most weeks he played, not that he would have been alone in that regard, yeah a short arse maybe up to my shoulders the time we made eye contact as we waited to cross the road with his hands all greasy from his Lord of the Fries chips … and in great news 49% of recipients are calling for Voss’ sacking!!

I'm 50/50 on Lethal. Probably had a mean streak, but then again, it was the 80's. That was par for the course for the way the game was played by many who dominated.
Btw, it would be remiss of me to not mention Tony Lockett in the greatest players ever.
Gun of a forward, greatest goal kicker in history. There was a 3 week period where he kicked 28 goals straight, no behinds, one of those games was a 16 goal haul!! Could whack Dunstall into that convo too and also Silvagni in the backline. Fark the more i think about it, the game's had so many good players. How do you determine the very best!?
Also, up the Roos! Sorry @supa!!

Also, not as a player, but Lethals coaching record up there with the very greatest of all time.
1 for the pies and 3 in a row for the Loins.
And a damn good analyst of the game in the media.
Didn't he get taken to court for his behind the ball hit on Neville Bruns? That sounded nasty.

And not the greatest of all time but Tony Modra deserves a special mention while i'm at it. I lived in SA through the Godra era and boy oh boy, he was as good as they came. And he surfed!!

“ Lord of the Fries chips”
Haha, nice one.

And then you have your Barassi's, Whitten's, Skilton's, Jesaulenko's, Coleman's, Dyer's, Doull's, Murray's, and Bourke's and a hundred years or so more. Before my time and only in the infancy of television broadcast so alot of what they did we never got to see, but no doubt, they stack up against any modern day greats, especially when you hear the reverence with which they're still spoken of by other greats and commentators of the game.

Haha you really need a Bombers win to distract you from this @southern

Urgh i know hey! I'm all the way back to living my football at the beginning of the industrial revolution!!

feel a bit looser now semester's finished @sr?
did you get across the line you reckon?

haha indeed @base. Did get a bit wound up throughout the semester but more due to other circumstances.
Plus if one was to do a forensic psychological analysis of my hisotrical footy froth right now, one would look no further than a current weather map of the SW of WA!! That and a coupla Coopers Stouts!
And yeah, got through it for the most part. Chugging along nicely w studies....and still a way to go to the end goal but no backwards steps in that regard.
Hope you're well mate.

yeh, I actually thought I was done with the cold unless exceptional conditions for the winter, haven't gone in the water at all for 2-3 weeks I reckon.
..but some small tidy conditions today with sunshine that had an easter sting in it, took the little Sanctum groveller esky lid I got last month to a little left near here and had a REALLY nice time.. feeling fucking great. paperwork done. got a houseguest coming to my shack in a bit.. @AW taking off to warmer climes in the morning.. feels like without the overt war horror in the forums (get enough of that in the 'real' world..), winter solstice has a bit of meaning and feeling here in swellnetville (hey @wax). nice stuff.

Ahh you guys don't get the current there like we do so i feel for ya!! Still got the Leeuwin kicking just enough around the corner to keep the water at a mild 19 or so degrees, even though it's like a blast of Antarctica outside.
That's epic you took the boog out and had a blast!! Always wanted to get one and muck around on the little slurpy shelves around here so maybe that's the little kicker i needed. Good onya @base! Stoked you got the froth.
Been back on the 6'0 27L ferrari last few surfs in good overhead offshore waves, so no complaints here either. Definitely been no shortage of premium pumping days the last month or two. Age old theory, when you're surfing good (or having a ball in the surf) ...life's good. Or maybe it's just that constant connection to the ocean. Carn Bombers!! hehe.

little fish that goes like a fun esky lid! yep. cold as fuck here in this liitle edge of otway basin. I always looked forward to going the scotland / ireland for the relative gulf stream warmth. just watching your obama thing.. engaging, normalness, isn't it..?
soz : ) back to the footyball..

ahhh fuck, gotchya!! Mate that sounds fun as! Love those kinda boards.
haha...balmy scotland calls you!!

ps. Indeed re. Obama.
A brilliant read of the situation spoken with wisdom and not derailed by passion.

@ southernraw, I ran into Godra a few times on K I, he was cruising around in a motor home, tuned him into a spot that can't be mentioned. I had a surf with him at Pennington which had a good bank. He wasn't too flash, but he knew what he was doing. Friendly down to earth bloke.
Saw him and the messiah out at 3 poles on the mid a few times too.
Suely any discussion of the AFL GOAT must include the great man himself.... Warrick Capper, ha ha.

Fair point Guy, yes we all make choices. I wasn't trying to excuse his behaviour which could be described thuggish by opposition supporters but hard and brave by those who follow his team. He was also indicative of the time and a product of his environment, like many others. In your anecdote about the run throughs, I personally think that it is the coach who shoulders the most blame. What sort of mentor sets up such a situation?
As for Voss, I feel for the bloke. Unlikely to see the year out. Happy to see them lose tho.

The Waz is in the house!! haha
Yeah surfed with Mod's down on the South Coast a few times when he was at the pinnacle of his career. Used to drive down in his orange kombi and park it down at the beach carpark where i lived so inevitably, as a frothing grom i'd sneak out and try to get a few waves with Godra.
People who didn't live in SA through that era will never know just how huge the Godra train was in Adelaide through that period. Bigger than the Beatles!!
btw must be noted i idolized Capper as a grom when he was at peak powers.
Didnt realise he ran a brothel nowadays!

but shit yeah, get one.. in the ute, I carry a lid and planes for slabby weirdness (usually for close-to-rock fun), boards, rods.. fucking anything that I can whip out if I find myself somewhere and vibed.. I feel that retirement pull of not-getting wet about ten years away, and I know I felt sad when my old man stopped being a southern-sea-feller.
southernraw wrote:..balmy scotland calls you!!
fucken oath it does. when I saw nate publicise a little slab the locals love east of my fave ferry-adjacent mainbreak.. is there nowhere left off yootoob? I'll get back there soon.. coupla kids thing to tie up.
(I actually have a UK passport too cos of some quirk about my old man being born there)

Great list Ringo,no arguments.
Any chance of Paul Kelly getting a run ?
I know ,90’s player but still pretty hard at it.
Season starting this week so we need a thread to document Collingwood's run to its it's 17th premiership and the year Nick Daico's wins his first of four brownlow medal's.
