Might as well put this up in the politics subforum, to spare the front page. It's 18 months away or so, but here we go.

This is how Dutton wins:

I agree that they should tax people properly when they are working or in business..…..but when they are retired……leave them alone….they've done their bit ……thats all I’m on about.

Yeah I understand what you’re saying but when you salary sacrifice into your super fund, don’t you only pay 15% tax ? I would like to see a complete overhaul of the tax system . A flat 10% no matter how much or how little you earn. For those that set up companies to lose money so it can be written off and they end up paying virtually no tax , I say tough titties , 10% tax on the gross earnings of any company and no tax returns for anyone or any company. Simplifying the tax system instead of the complicated mess that has the average joe paying more than his share while loopholes allow others to laugh and get even richer because of the system .

Agreed, it’s needs updating and a flat tax for all.
Under Keating, Jim chalmers hero, I was working 60 hours a week for $6000 a month and taking home $2800…… Keating wasn’t even putting in a return and got busted for it too…..

Opti,

The 1996 Wallis Inquiry recommended SMSF’s be established to provide the self employed and business owners with a retirement income. This was a result of the decision to discontinue Defined Benefit Superannuation Schemes.

The introduction of SMSF’s allowed members to incorporate their business into the fund and further amendments under Howard in 2007 basically made it open slather for anyone to run a SMSF. Investment property could also be included as well as farms.

I will never understand why a business, or a farm could not be operated under a conventional corporate structure, but one of the benefits of including these in a SMSF was, instead of paying corporate taxes on profits, you could now pay only 15%, and that was while in accumulation mode.

Capital Gains Tax was still payable but only on disposal of the asset and it is discounted by 33%. But why pay CGT at all when all you needed to do was to switch the fund into Pension mode, where no tax whatsoever is payable on either income or capital gains.

That’s just a brief explanation of how it works.

Running a SMSF can be complicated and time consuming exercise but under Howard and Costello it has become a government sanctioned Tax Avoidance structure, so the benefits far outweigh the disadvantages. Given the members of SMSF’s are reasonably wealthy, you have extremely high income earners who pay no tax whatsoever while a worker in the local factory can be paying up to 37c in the dollar.

Taxing unrealised capital gains while in accumulation mode is one way the recoup taxes.

Also please note that anyone holding investment property outside of a SMSF will ultimately be hit with CGT.

Providing an estimated 80,000 high income multi-millionaires with a tax free business structure disguised as a SMSF is grossly unfair, particularly as it inflicts a higher tax burden on the PAYG taxpayer.

They could do some extra ordinary things like budget wisely……
Or stop the scammers in the NDIS…..etc etc…
But it’s not their money is it…..and a billion here and a billion there just rolls off the tongue so easily.

So I take it you don’t have a problem in all that Howard era middle/upper class welfare being repealed by the current government?

I agree with Supa, a complete overhaul of our taxation system is required.

Ross Garnaut, recently pointed out had Abbott not repealed Gillards MRRT, the Australian taxpayer would be $80 billion better off.

The "Trickle Down Economics" espoused by the right, sadly does not trickle down to the lower sections of society.

If it's not obvious by now, everything Howard and Costello touched was to benefit the well off, higher income earners, and the little guy could go and get stuffed.

Sussan Ley has made a good start by recognising there is an issue. “We have to have a Liberal Party that respects modern Australia, that reflects modern Australia, and that represents modern Australia."
Good luck with that, some significant structural and personnel change required.

18 Voting Age = ( Adult Aged ~ Parties / Policies )
Here's a few examples of why Oz can't lower the Voting Age
Govts Campaign on minimizing harm by preventing Youth Access with mandatory Age Verification

(Disclaimer / Exemption) tbb is actually researching Climate Policy / Vote Tally.
And this stood out as bold as brass...Ok!

AEC Voting Age 18 (Warning) /R\ Promotion of Adult orientated Policy Parties / Agenda

It is a crime to admit or elicit minors > Adult Rallies branding Adult T Shirts / Signs / How 2 Votes

Although Major Parties permit Youth Membership...
18+ Policy would necessitate closed door debate...(Cough!)

AEC (Age 18+ Verification Exemptions)
AEC employ Youth (Under 18 y/o) For ~ {Temp Level 1} (For following tasks)
* Inspect 18+ [ID] Voter Docs / info > Report & Take appropriate Action.
* Account for Adult orientated election materials
* Manage & Maintain security protocols of all Adult election materials
* Strictly Adult Supervised Vote Handling / Counting

Note : AEC admits to employing Kids as bouncers & dobbers for stings to catch out Vote Fraudsters.

Political Parties / Policy (No Party prohibits minors to mandatory 18+ Campaigns)
(Loose obvious Civic Examples)
Electricity Account 18 y/o ( No AEC Age Verification required for Q&A kid nuking the Energy Debate)
Legalize Cannabis Party 18 y/o Possession / Sales (No AEC Age Verification required)
Shooters / Fishing Party 18 y/o Full Licencing (No AEC Age Verification required)
Animal Justice Party 18 y/o Pet registration (No AEC Age Restriction required)

Gonna have to Vote on which 18+ Vice is more inappropriate to debate than the other...

AEC Mass Vice Exemption Loophole / Points of Interest
A minor is restricted by Age Verification during every / online encounter outside of AEC Campaigns.
Informing that only AEC permits open access Vice Adult merch to Minors during Electoral Periods.
Cannot find any other Association that is exempted to openly promote Mass Adult Merch upon Youth!
Lowering the Voting Age would expose more youth to AEC's expanding Evil Adult Vice Empire

[Factcheck]
tbb was prohibited to access AEC Party / Any ALL 'Social Pages' without (Variable Age) Subscription
However tbb was never once asked to verify age to access www AEC Adult 18+ Policy / Merch.
Well...until now (See one new Typical Please Explain example below!)
As said > outside of AEC ...tbb was denied access to same info / merch via Age Verification...Got it!

Verifying : AEC Elections #1 Promotion of Adult Vice onto Youth
Neutral tbb cannot find any 18+ Political Party adopting Voluntary Age Verification nor any requirement.
Oz Elections are promoting #1 Vice Harm to Nation's Youth + Not one constituent gives a fuck!

Advisory
Govt can shut this loophole
[Voting Harms yer Health 18+ Restricted] Banner on all AEC Merch!
tbb is not advocating as such just debating over who decides which Party / Policy is more evil.

Default 100% neutral review acts as a wake up call to Democratized Zombies...
AEC's compulsory brainwashed walking talking ticking time bombs denuded of moral compass!
Can do no harm as a Flock of Zombies...All Voters are #1 Puppets for Evil AEC Vice Empire!
WTFU...Boycott Voting in Oz #1 Vice Merch Mall > Fucking up yer kidz brainz!
Just saying...grow a brain & install a moral compass before voting for yer Fav' AEC Mobsters...well durr!

In closing...
Ya can't lower the Voting Age without first immunizing AEC from a swathe of further 16+ Vice Rorts.
Guessing that would mandate a Digitized Age Verification My Gov AEC enrollment / Voter [ID]
Electronic Voting.

Written & Authorized by no one pretending to care about unlawful AEC lowering the tone in yer town!

Geez it would be funny if Timmy actually didn't win the seat...

From Guardian.

Tom McIlroy
The teal independent Zoe Daniel is hanging on to hope she might win back the Melbourne seat of Goldstein, despite Liberal Tim Wilson claiming victory.

Daniel posted on social media last night that she had “clawed back” from an approximate 1,500 vote deficit on Friday to 401 votes on Wednesday night:

I have every finger crossed that a batch of international postal votes lands in the next two days among a few other things that need to go our way.

No matter what, as always I am so buoyed by the love, support and ferocious determination that has been sent my way over the last week and a half.

To my volunteers who have been hanging over every, single, vote, no matter what happens, you will forever be my people.

Wilson and the Liberal party are confident he has won the seat. He voted in the Liberal leadership ballot earlier this week and is in the running for a position on the opposition frontbench under Sussan Ley.

The margin is now down to 305. Daniel is still a chance.
