Today’s Forecaster Notes are brought to you by Rip Curl

This week and weekend (Jan 16 - 21)

We've got a dynamic and tricky forecast period ahead with a deepening Tasman Low just to our east which will be mainly to far north to generate any major size.

Yesterday we saw a strong front push up past the coast, generating today's pulse of swell, but a secondary system has moved up this afternoon, keeping plenty of S'ly swell hitting the coast.

We'll see this front help spawn a deep Tasman Low to our east, with winds relaxing off our coast resulting in a drop in S/SE windswell tomorrow from 3-4ft at south magnets, much smaller elsewhere.

Winds look average for spots picking up the most size though with a S/SW tending SE breeze.

A temporary low point in swell is expected Wednesday morning, but into the afternoon we should see a good pulse of E/SE groundswell spreading out radially from a fetch of gale to severe-gale S/SE winds on the southern flank of the low.

We're probably looking at surf around 2ft in the morning, pulsing to 3ft into the afternoon, with Thursday seeing stronger 3-4ft+ surf as the biggest pulse fills in.

The most size will be found across the northern half of the coast, due to the position of the low to our east, with the far extents expected to be much smaller. There'll also be a small hint of E/NE energy from an infeed of NE gales on the lows eastern flank, but this will be hard to discern.

Winds will improve from Wednesday with a light offshore W'ly wind ahead of E/NE sea breezes, offshore from the NW most of Thursday.

The E/SE swell is expected to ease Friday from 2-3ft with offshore NW tending W winds.

Moving into the weekend, a trough will bring a S/SE change on Saturday and a small weak windswell, fading through Sunday. Some small E/SE windswell may be seen early next week, but we'll have another look at this Wednesday.
