Manly

Best of 2013: Part 1

If you asked me how this year rated surf wise I'd say average. But after looking back on snaps taken from my travels across the country, it shows how quickly we forget the good waves we've had once the surf goes flat.

This is an article about blame and responsibility. I was provoked into writing it after getting hit by a loose surfboard at Manly Beach on a midsummer Sunday. As all right-thinking surfers know, the chances of getting hit are greatly increased when surfing at such an hour. Therefore, if first principles are to be observed I'm at fault simply for being out there.

Sydney's Seven Mile Miracle

'Manly: 7 miles from Sydney, 1000 miles from care'

Hawaii isn't the only place with a Seven Mile Miracle though our one is miraculous for a somewhat different reason. Just seven miles (or eleven kilometres for the pedants) from the centre of Sydney lies Manly Beach. There's not to many cities in the world where you can grab a few clearwater waves in the morning and be seated in your CBD office half an hour later. The only other place I can think of is the Four Mile Miracle - Bondi. Though the real miracle at Bondi is an uncrowded wave that doesn't close out.

East meets South

Yesterday in Sydney surfers woke to a mid-size east swell breaking under flawless offshore conditions. Within an hour of sunrise, however, a gusty southerly change shut down many of the options and sent surfers scurrying. There are a few spots in Sydney that respond to a straight east swell and southerly wind, Manly being one of them. From Queenscliff in the north to Winki in the south the swell/wind combo proved a good mix for locals and travellers alike.

Swellnet forecaster and part-time photographer, Craig Brokensha, caught some of the action.

Australia's Most Popular Beach

Manly Beach is Australia's most popular beach. That's something I read once. Don't ask me where, it might've been a Surfrider study or a tourist brochure, but I distinctly remember the claim that it was busier than Bondi.

Correct or not, Manly is an extremely crowded beach which made a recent session there all the more surprising: it was four feet, offshore and completely uncrowded.

Lost In The Flurry

OK, this session may be old news, especially to the people who were there and experienced it. It's Manly two weeks ago during the last burst of East Coast swell. Shot by Rob Woodward, then lost by me in a flurry of emails, and finally found again in a desperate attempt to bring order and cleanliness back to my life.

Seven Miles From Sydney...

...a Thousand Miles From Care. I think that's how Manly's marketing spiel goes. After five days of onshore wind, Craig Brokensha spent a carefree morning shooting as the wind swung offshore and the east swell pumped. All photos by Craig.
