This week and next (Jan 28 - Feb 5)

After the small run of surf the last couple of days, we’ve got our new mid-period SW swell for tomorrow ahead of the larger SW groundswell event on Friday.

There’s no change to the expected size tomorrow with inconsistent 4-5ft sets due on the South West swell magnets, 1ft to possibly 2ft in Mandurah and 1-1.5ft across Perth. A moderate to fresh SE breeze is due tomorrow morning in the South West, possibly tending E/SE at times ahead of sea breezes, S/SE-SE to the north.

We then look at the large, powerful, long-period SW groundswell due across the state on Friday, with the polar low linked to this swell currently generating a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds to our south-west. These winds have been generated since yesterday, though we’ll see the low weakening today while dipping east-southeast.

We may see the forerunners on dark tomorrow but the peak is due Friday with consistent 8-10ft waves across most exposed breaks in the South West and 12ft cleanups. Mandurah looks to offer 3ft+ sets with 2-3ft waves across Perth.

Winds look OK and fresh to strong from the SE through the morning, strong out of the S/SE-S/SW into the afternoon.

The swell will ease Saturday and winds look more favourable, shifting fresh E/SE in the morning as the swell eases steadily from 5-6ft+ in the South West, 2ft+ in Mandurah and 2ft across Perth.

Our reinforcing SW groundswell for Sunday afternoon and Monday morning is looking a little good with a great fetch of W/SW gales forecast to be generated on the tail of the current low. This secondary polar front will be more distant resulting in less consistency.

The swell from this source is due to build Sunday afternoon, reaching an inconsistent 5-6ft+ across the South West late, coming in at a similar size Monday morning, then easing. Mandurah should offer 2-3ft sets Monday morning with 2ft+ waves across Perth and conditions are lining up nicely with fresh to strong morning E/SE-SE winds ahead of sea breezes.

Tuesday will be clean as the swell eases, smaller Wednesday with stronger SE breezes.

Longer term, moderate sized pulses of mid-period S/SW swell are due through the rest of the week and next weekend, and any tropical developments across the north of the country aren’t currently expected to bring any swell. More on this Friday.

Swell came in strong around Mandurah this morning. Medge cam should provide fun viewing at work.
