Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 20th September)

Best Days: Saturday morning, Sunday morning and Monday in the South West, later next week

Recap

Large and messy surf across all locations yesterday, still sizey this morning and slowly improving across the South West but best in protected spots. Mandurah and Perth were the pick with clean 3-4ft waves in the former, 2-3ft later.

Today’s Forecaster Notes are brought to you by Rip Curl

This weekend and next week (Sep 21 - 27)

The surf will drop this afternoon and continue to ease off into tomorrow and Sunday but conditions will become cleaner across the South West. A morning SE breeze is now due tomorrow, E/SE further north with the swell easing back from 5-6ft, 2ft+ in Mandurah and 1-2ft in Perth.

Sunday will likely dip back to 4-5ft, but a new S/SW groundswell from a pre-frontal fetch of W/NW gales around the Heard Island region during this week should provide a boost back to 4-6ft into the afternoon.

Perth and Mandurah will continue to drop with the southerly swell direction.

Conditions will be even better in the South West with an E/NE offshore, giving into afternoon sea breezes, similar Monday but more variable into the afternoon across the South West as the swell eases.

Looking at the rest of the week and there's nothing too major on the cards with smaller swells and deteriorating winds Tuesday and Wednesday.

We're got a new large SW groundswell on the cards for late in the week though, generated by a strong polar low forming south-west of us early in the week.

Both ECMWF and GFS are forecasting this low, with a slow moving fetch of severe-gale to storm-force SW winds due to be aimed at is. With the low staying further away, locally winds are looking lighter, but we'll have to confirm this Monday.

Size wise we should see Margs building to the 10ft+ range Friday morning, 3ft+ Perth and 3ft Mandurah but check back here Monday for the latest on this. Have a great weekend!
