Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 20th February)

Best Days: Protected spots in the South West tomorrow AM, early Friday, Sunday morning all locations, Monday morning Margs and Mandurah, Tuesday morning Margs

Recap

A good pulse of S'ly groundswell yesterday got into some of the spots I wouldn't have expected and conditions were OK and workable. With the southerly direction Mandurah and Perth remained tiny.

Today the swell is a bit smaller though nice and clean but we'll see some new energy building into the afternoon, but with sea breezes.

This weekend and next week (Feb 21 - 24)

This afternoon's increase in mid-period and long-period swells should peak tomorrow morning, but unfortunately our onshore breeze is still on the cards.

There's been no change to the expected size with consistent smaller sets to 4-5ft or so with the mid-period energy and larger inconsistent 5-6ft+ sets with the long-period energy across the South West, 2ft to possibly 3ft in Mandurah and 1-2ft in Perth but very inconsistent.

A surface trough moving in from the west will bring S/SW onshore winds to the South West and even worse SW winds further north, lighter and more variable Friday morning but, increasing from the NW through the day . To the north winds will tend W after being variable though possibly from the S/SW Friday morning.

The swell will be smaller though and easing back from 3-5ft across the South West magnets, 1ft to possibly 2ft sets in Mandurah, 1-1.5ft in Perth.

Saturday will be a lay day as the swell reaches a low point with a N/NW onshore down around Margs, early out of the NE to the north but with no size.

The new W/SW swell for Sunday and weaker follow up SW swell for Monday is still on the cards but with a touch less size.

A small burst of W/SW gales will be projected through our western swell window, followed by a broader but weaker fetch of strong SW winds on its tail, with the first long-period W/SW swell arriving for Sunday morning.

Margs should see fun 5-6ft sets on the exposed reefs, 2ft waves in Mandurah and 1-2ft sets in Perth with a morning S/SE breeze in the South West, more offshore to the north.

The swell should ease a touch into Monday with the reinforcing mid-period energy keeping the South West around 4-5ft all day, 1-2ft in Mandurah and 1-1.5ft in Perth with a better SE-E/SE wind across all locations.

Tuesday will be cleaner again but on the small side and easing with the next swell possibly showing late week. More on this Friday.
