Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 21st September)

Best Days: Perth Saturday morning, possibly Perth Monday morning, both regions Wednesday morning

Recap

Great waves around Perth and Mandurah yesterday morning with 2-3ft sets, while the South West was decent with light winds and large surf before a NW'ly kicked in.

Today onshores continued across the South West with smaller amounts of swell while Perth and Mandurah were fun and either side of 2ft.

This week and weekend (Sep 22 - 25)

Tomorrow isn't looking too flash with onshore winds due to move in across all coasts with an approaching front. A small lift in swell is expected but this is insignificant compared to the SW swell due into Friday.

This swell started to be produced by a strong mid-latitude front firing up north of Heard Island, with it now weakening to our south-west today. The front will project north-east towards us tomorrow and into us on Friday.

Onshore S/SW winds along with a large increase in SW swell are due, reaching 6-8ft across the South West and 2ft+ in Perth into the afternoon.

The swell will ease into Saturday and Sunday, but winds will remain onshore in the South West from the W/NW on the former and S/SW later. Perth should be cleaner with a light morning E/NE offshore Saturday morning and easing 2ft sets. Sunday is likely to see onshore winds move in.

Next week onwards (Sep 26 onwards)

Into Monday and Tuesday two separate pulses of new swell are due. The first for Monday will arrive from the S/SW generated by a strong polar frontal system Friday and Saturday.

Margs should see 6ft sets while Perth will be a smaller 1-2ft, biggest from mid-late morning.

A secondary more northerly front will then move in quickly from the south-west on Sunday and Monday, generating an additional SW swell for Tuesday to a similar 6ft. Perth should offer more consistent 2ft sets off this swell with it being more favourable in the swell window.

Unfortunately there'll be no let up in the onshore winds around Margs until Wednesday morning when the swell eases, while Perth may see an early SE breeze Monday morning. We'll have another look at this Friday.
