Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 12th September)

Best Days: Swell magnets around Margs Tuesday and Wednesday, both regions Saturday

Recap

Average onshore 6-8ft waves in the South West Saturday morning, kicking into the afternoon as winds tended S/SE, favouring protected spots. Perth was clean and around 2ft.

Saturday's kick in SW groundswell eased back into Sunday with cleaner conditions in the South West under a SE breeze. 6-8ft sets were seen, with easing 1-2ft waves around Perth.

Today the swell has really dropped away with 1-1.5ft waves north of Margs, and 3-4ft sets around town. A new S/SW groundswell failed to really stop the easing trend in the South West.

This week and weekend (Sep 13 - 18)

You'll have to stick to the magnets around the South West for any chance of a wave tomorrow with inconsistent background energy to 3-4ft. Perth will be tiny and 1ft max.

Conditions should be good all day with a fresh E/SE offshore, blowing most of the day.

Wednesday should see a slight kick in new S/SW groundswell, generated by a late forming and less than favourably aligned polar front currently to our south-southwest.

Exposed breaks to the south swell should see 3-5ft sets with tiny waves around Perth under E/NE tending variable winds.

A secondary pulse of slightly better SW groundswell is due Thursday produced by a better aligned fetch of W/SW gales around Heard Island.

Inconsistent 4-6ft sets are due around Margs, 1ft+ Perth but with an onshore NW tending S/SW wind. Perth should see an early E/NE'ly.

The onshore change will be linked to a weakening polar front pushing into us during Thursday. This front has started its life south-east of South Africa, with a fetch of gale to severe-gale W'ly winds forecast to be produced through our south-west swell window before the front projects up and into us Thursday.

A large SW groundswell is due off this low, kicking strongly later Friday, peaking overnight and easing Saturday.

The South West should build to 8-10ft+ by dark Friday and easing off slowly from a similar size Saturday morning with 2-3ft sets around Perth Saturday morning.

Winds on Friday will be an issue and from the S/SW, with Saturday looking much better due to a light offshore wind.

Sunday will see onshore W/NW winds redevelop across the coast as another front pushes into us.

Longer term another large S/SW groundswell is on the cards for early next week, but more on this Wednesday.
