Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 3rd August)

Best Days: Thursday Perth, possibly South West, Friday both coasts

Recap

Good waves yesterday morning across the South West with 6-8ft of swell before winds went more north, while Perth and Mandurah remained good most of the day with good 2-3ft sets.

Today was smaller and wind affected across both regions, but manageable to the north.

This week and weekend (Aug 4 - 7)

The approaching front bringing increasing onshore winds will move off quickly tomorrow, leaving a mid-period W/SW swell in its wake for the morning.

Margs should see 4-6ft surf, with 1-2ft waves further north and variable winds are due to the north, with lingering S/SW winds in the South West, possibly variable if we're lucky.

Friday looks better with an light offshore E'ly tending variable wind through the day and building W/SW groundswell.

This swell is being generated currently by a short-lived and strong mid-latitude front projecting a fetch of W/SW gales towards us.

Margs should build to 6ft to possibly 8ft through the mid-late afternoon, with Perth kicking to 2ft. A drop is then due Saturday from 5-6ft and 2ft respectively Saturday morning but with increasing NW tending N/NW winds.

Into Sunday another pulse of W/SW groundswell is due, generated by a secondary broader and slower moving fetch of SW gales being aimed towards us.

This swell looks to build to a similar size as Friday's but conditions will be poor with a fresh W/SW tending W/NW breeze.

Next week onwards (Aug 8 onwards)

Now on the backside of the frontal system generating Sunday's swell, another polar front will push up and into us, then spawning into a deep and intense mid-latitude low right to our south-west Sunday evening.

This low will be very slow moving with multiple fetches of gale to severe-gale SW tending S/SW winds being aimed into us.

This should generate large levels of SW tending S/SW swell for Monday through Wednesday with onshore winds through the whole period. Even on the backside of the swell Thursday poor W'ly winds are due.

Size wise we're looking at a peak in the South West Tuesday to 12ft+ across exposed breaks and 3-4ft in Perth. We'll confirm this Friday though.
