Victorian Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 15th April)

Best Days: Today, tomorrow, Sunday, Wednesday Surf Coast for the keen

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Low point in swell tomorrow morning ahead of a new, moderate sized + SW groundswell into the afternoon
  • Light N/NE tending NE winds tomorrow
  • Easing S/SW groundswell Sun with strong N winds (easing and tending N/NW into the PM Surf Coast and N/NE on the MP for most of the day)
  • Light W/SW-SW tending fresh S winds Mon (early W/NW Surf Coast) with a moderate sized, inconsistent SW groundswell for the PM
  • Easing groundswell Tue with fresh S/SE winds
  • Building, mid-period SW swell Wed PM with fresh NW tending W/NW winds
  • Large SW groundswell building Thu with S/SE winds

Recap

One of the best days of surfing for a long time across the Surf Coast yesterday with Wednesday afternoon's strong pulse of S/SW groundswell easing back to the 4ft range (bigger sets magnets) while a reinforcing SW pulse steadied the easing trend into the afternoon. Winds were great, flirting from the east at times while the beaches to the east were a little too large but also clean all day.

Today the reinforcing SW groundswell is on the ease, with 4ft sets on the Surf Coast and 5-6ft waves to the east. We'll see conditions remain favourable most of the day again with winds going variable.

This weekend and next week (Apr 16 – 22)

The last few day's of quality groundswell will ease back temporarily into tomorrow morning but the Surf Coast shouldn't drop below 2-3ft on the swell magnets with 4ft+ sets to the east.

Into the afternoon we should see our new pulse of SW swell filling in, generated by a healthy polar front that's been moving through our swell window since yesterday and is generating strong to gale-force W/SW winds in our southern swell window today.

This will produce a moderate sized + swell which should kick to 4-5ft on the Surf Coast magnets with 6ft+ sets to the east, easing through Sunday from 4ft and 5-6ft respectively.

Winds tomorrow will favour the beaches with a light N/NE tending NE breeze (best in the morning to the east before the swell gets too big).

While Sunday will see stronger N'ly winds, easing slightly into the afternoon and tending N/NW on the Surf Coast. To the east winds should be N/NE on the peninsula and straighter N across Phillip Island.

A trough will move in Sunday evening, with early light W/SW-SW winds left into Monday morning (possibly W/NW early Surf Coast), strengthening out of the S'th later morning as a high starts edging in.

Swell wise the surf will be smaller and back to 2-3ft on the Surf Coast and 4-5ft to the east. A new, inconsistent SW groundswell should arrive mid-late morning though, generated by a more fractured polar low that's currently east of the Heard Island region. A distant fetch of strong to gale-force winds are being generated and the size of this swell will be inconsistent and peaking Monday afternoon to 3-4ft on the Surf Coast and 5-6ft to the east but with those fresh S winds.

Tuesday looks to remain average with fresh S/SE breezes as the SW groundswell eases, shifting back to the NW on Wednesday as a cold front pushes in from the west.

Now, this cold front will be attached to a great polar frontal progression firing up through south-west of Western Australia on Sunday, strengthening while pushing under the country next week.

This will be a sustained and multi-threaded frontal progression with some new, mid-period SW energy due to build later Wednesday ahead of a larger SW groundswell on Thursday, peaking into the afternoon.

Unfortunately behind Wednesday's front we'll see another high move in bringing S/SE breezes, creating poor conditions at the peak of the swell. Size wise the Surf Coast should offer waves in the 6ft+ range, 8ft to the east but we'll confirm this Monday. Have a great weekend!

I'm unvaxxed, chain smoke ciggies and eat takeaway everyday. It was the most mild flu Ive ever had. Hardly noticed it. Also happy to live under a rock and keep to myself seen as the vaccine doesn't work. It's not like I'm aloud too work with people anyway.

It's a real eye opener of just how little of modern society is actually needed for a wholesome life.

VJ. That’s one of the best little statements I’ve read for a long while. You are so spot on. We’ve all been conned.
I never asked for modern societies foibles, I’d be quite happy to not have a mobile phone and all the shit that’s ‘advertised in ya face’. As it says in the song ‘Getting Back’ (M.O.T.E) ‘Life Was Simple, Don’t Rip Off People and It Was Fun ‘

Thanks goofy, here’s one to make the mind boogie

That’s double overhead easy 4 hell chargers out. Sensor on the camera was a little dirty so focus is lacking a little.

Thanks too mainly been laydown long boog finless with a decent knee brace to stay in the water but something as little as the rail re-engaging coming out of a laydown spin and the knee pings a little.

Surfed a finned board a couple of weeks back went ok but have regressed a little recently unfortunately. Needs a proper rest & further rehab / treatment I think.

The silver lining - shooting a few photos :)

What kind of deal have Swellnet given the owner? The owners just another Air BB owner whose only bought there to make money and for the tax breaks, like most recent blowins,Spy River has been renamed Sth Lorne as that is what’s it’s become, Funny thing is the waves at Wye have gone missing in action for a fair while now. Is a cam really necessary at this marginal spot?

Might keep the crowds down, most people who do the drive just paddle out no matter the crowd factor, if it looks crowded on the cam, some people might think fuck that's too crowded, but if they don't go it won't be crowded but look crowded even if it is crowded but not crowded because it looks crowded but might not be crowded if they don't go, but who knows how crowded it will be later, after the people who don't go because it looks crowded but isn't actually crowded. That's what I reckon.

Icandig I’m feeling it. Three days in to my first bout of Covid and I feel like absolute garbage. Completely ass kicked me so far. And still have to somehow parent 3 boys under 10 with cabin fever and try not give it to them! They’ll catch it from me I would’ve thought…. Just hoping they don’t get as crook as I am.
Hope you’re back up at it and in the water soon.

njc...my wife got it, then me and my 17 year old son dodged it (despite being in close quarters with both of us). Spoke to a mate this arvo and he got the same ass kicking as me. Spoke to a different mate who just had a slight rash and felt a bit off. It's a wiley and unpredictable beast. Did my first bit of light exercise (a real slow cycle) today and man does it feel good to be in the fresh air. It'll pass but it's a bastard. I understand now how it can kill people.

AlfredWallace's picture

Does it really matter if there is or isn’t a Winki cam. Surfers from anywhere local or out of town converge regardless. If you are a truly connected surfer and follow the ocean, winds and moon cycles-tides and can actually read a weather map ( fast disappearing skill I must say) without someone sticking the baby’s bottle in your mouth to know if it’s on or not or if you are going to score waves. Don’t get me started on the losers who constantly contact Swellnet HQ, asking why is this camera down, I pay my subscription and all that shit. Think about it , for $6.95, $8.95 or whatever subscription you choose per month you get unbelievable information regarding surfing but, and I know most would agree, the added bonus of the endless stream of oceanographic, climatological and meteorological information the boys provide, its invaluable and priceless and fucking cheap. Look how well we have all been informed over the last two and a bit years regarding La Niña. There’s not one subscriber that could say they are not better off for being spoon fed this great information. Fair Dinkum
