Note: Today’s Forecaster Notes will be brief, as Craig is away on annual leave (usual Mon/Wed/Fri forecasts will resume next week).

Here it comes: after an extended period of tiny, blowy conditions we’re about to see a major upswing in wave heights as the storm track finally aligns properly in our swell window.

Winds should be W’ly early Sunday but will very strong to gale force W/SW tending SW throughout the day. As such only protected locations will have waves and they’ll be considerably smaller than the open beaches (which should be somewhere north of 4ft and up to 6ft, though very bumpy).

If you’re going to surf on Sunday, aim for the afternoon as this is when we’re likely to see the most size (and thus potential for protected spots).

Wave heights will ease steadily through Monday though open beaches should still be pretty solid early. Winds will also ease and early light to moderate W/NW winds are possible, though redeveloping W/SW to SW winds are likely throughout the day. It'll be borderline in the size department for protected locations though.

Wave heights will then continue to ease steadily into Tuesday morning and the rest of the week is looking better for surface conditions with either moderate to fresh offshore or variable winds. Unfortunately, the storm track will again align itself outside of our swell window so we’re looking at only small flukey swells throughout the week - one arriving later Tues and Wed could deliver inconsistent 2ft sets - but it won't be until the middle of the week where we’ll see a polar low develop well south of West Oz that has the potential to generate a better long period S/SW swell for Friday and Saturday. This is what we’ll be keeping a close eye on over the coming days.

More on that on Monday. Have a great weekend!
