Quiet start to the week but looking better for late in the week

James KC

South-east Queensland and Northern NSW Surf Forecast by James Casey (issued Monday 7th June)

Best Days: Thursday/Friday

Outlook (tl;dr)

  • Quiet start to the week
  • Low point on Tuesday
  • Weak N/NE windswell for Wednesday
  • Small E swell for Thursday/Friday
  • Potential for flukey, longer period E swell for the weekend

Recap

A weekend of waves with surf peaking on Saturday morning up around the 4-5ft mark south of the border and more like 2-3ft for SE QLD.

Waves eased into Sunday with only small waves in the 1-1.5ft on offer today, while it is more in the 2ft mark south of the border. Winds were light out of the S and this morning so conditions were clean.

This week

Winds will build out of the NE this afternoon, strongest for the MNC and a bit lighter and more E/NE for SE QLD.

From tomorrow (Tuesday) until Thursday there’s not a lot to get excited about. A cut off low and cold pool of air will move over our region and cool things down for the middle to end of the week, reminding us that winter is here.

There’s a weak N/NE windswell best for the MNC on Wednesday but otherwise it's a bit ho hum. With strong winds out of the N/NW early tending more W as the day goes on, there’ll be bumpier but slightly bigger waves earlier and smaller cleaner options later.

An E swell will arrive on Thursday thanks to east winds around another low just to the west of NZ’s North Island earlier in the week. While it won’t be anything special it will provide a bit more action in the water with 2-3ft waves across the region, peaking late Thursday into Friday morning. Winds will be out of the W/NW for most of the day so the beach breaks will probably be the pick.

Friday will see the E swell hold and with winds out of the W/NW so again the beachies will have the best conditions.

The weekend

As the cut off low moves offshore into the end of the week and at the staft of the new week it begins to get tricky. An infeed of N/NE winds doesn’t look all that well aimed towards the east coast but a distant fetch of E winds to the north of NZ looks decent for SE QLD and N NSW.

This fetch seems to ramp up and be well aimed from late Wednesday/Thursday onwards meaning there could be a longer period E swell arriving for the weekend. This means we will see the 2-3ft of E swell continue from Thursday into the weekend. With W winds looking to continue as the cut off low slowly moves to the south and east, conditions should be nice.

Let’s keep an eye on it and I’ll provide an update for Wednesday.

Pretty lame surf outlook for this week after a super consistent year of waves on the Gold Coast. Next weekend could offer more rideable options with a inbound easterly swell. Hopefully winds are more W/NW and not too strong.
