Eastern Tasmanian Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri Nov 25th)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Small mixed bag this weekend with mostly offshore winds
  • Not much on the radar for early next week
  • Small S swell pulse Wed next week
  • Slightly stronger S swell pulse Thurs, easing Fri with onshore winds developing

Recap

Small levels of S swell have maintained some surfable waves at S facing beaches with yesterday seeing 2-3ft of surf at S facing beaches and a similar size today as a last pulse of S swell makes landfall under light winds, W’ly at first tending to light seabreezes.

This weekend and next week (Nov25-Dec2)

No great change to the weekend forecast. A high moving in from the Bight and a trough bring a SW flow tomorrow before winds set in from the N during the a’noon. No great size is expected with just marginal 1-2ft leftovers.

A front brings a more W’ly flow through Sun with some small NE windswell available early in the 2ft range, easing quickly during the day as short period swell trains die down.

Not much expected for early next week. A high in the Bight with continuing fronts maintains a W’ly flow through Mon and Tues with only tiny surf expected, mostly tiny refracted S swell trains around a foot.

Bigger S swells are expected Wed as a deeper parent low passes to the south of the Island Tues with size in the 2-3ft range and continuing W to W/NW winds maintaining groomed conditions.

This swell pulse then eases through Thurs before a bigger, final pulse of S swell makes landfall from a passing low with gales well to the South of the Island (see below). Expect surf in the 3ft range at S facing beaches to rebuild later Thurs, easing quickly into Fri.

Winds will tend SE to ESE through Thurs as a high moves SE then E of the state.

Further into next week, attention turns to the Coral Sea where a sub-tropical low is expected to spray the QLD Points with swell.

A present this system is too far north to generate any sizeable swell for Tasmania so we’re looking at small amounts of E/NE from winds off the bottom of the high in the Tasman, likely not exceeding 1-2ft.

We may see some NE windswell develop over next weekend as the high moves away from the East coast.

Check back Mon for the latest there and have a great weekend!
