Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • NE windswell on the cards for Mon, easing Tues with offshore winds
  • Another round of NE windswell possible Wed, peaking Thurs
  • Small NE windswell endures Fri/Sat
  • Small S swell spike Sun
  • Small SE swell Mon, persisting at low levels into Wed

Recap

Not much action on the weekend with small 1-2ft surf Sat, easing further into Sun. A small NE windswell signal has seen some 2ft sets today with a fresh NW flow. This NW to W/NW flow is expected for a few days.

This week and next week (Aug1 - Aug 12)

We’ve finally come to a low spot in the current La Niña phase we are in with energy being dialled right back this week.  The high pressure belt is moving at a more typical northerly latitude over interior Australia and with weaker, more mobile high pressure moving over the interior and into the Tasman, we are looking at a period of N’ly biased winds with W’ly oriented fronts being quickly shunted across the Tasman. A monster low slamming WA early this week, decays in the Bight before pushing into the Tasman over the weekend and doesn’t look to generate much surf for the Eastern seaboard.

In the short run we are looking at small NE leftovers through Tues with size in the 1-2ft range and fresh NW to W/NW winds.

This energy ebbs away to tiny levels on Wed with continuing winds from the NW.

Another N’ly flow off the South Coast NSW as high pressure moves into the Tasman sees NE windswell on Wed build to fun-sized 3ft+ with continuing NW winds (see below). It's not a perfectly aligned fetch but it's broad enough to generate fun surf.

This fetch looks a little more persistent to there should be some rideable 2footers on offer through Thurs and into Fri with continuing NW flow.

The weekend sees the decaying low approach from the Bight with small NE windswell leftovers in the 1-2ft range Sat and light NW winds.

A SW-S change Sun, should whip up a small spike in S swell Sun, in the 2ft range.

The decaying low then sits E of Tasmania with a small SE fetch off the bottom of the low sending a small signal of SE swell to the East Coast, in the 2ft range with a light S’ly flow expected.

Into the middle/end of next week and the low sets up shop on the Eastern side of New Zealand, maintaining a weak fetch of SE-ESE winds off the bottom of the South Island. This should hold some small SE-ESE swell for the East Coast of Tasmania early next week, with a more solid S swell expected Thurs/Fri next week as a stronger low enters the Tasman.

Check back Wed for a fresh update.
