Eastern Tasmanian Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri July 29th)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Minor S swell Fri with fresh SW winds
  • Small surf over the weekend
  • NE windswell on the cards for Mon, easing Tues with offshore winds
  • Another round of NE windswell possible Wed, peaking Thurs

Recap

Surf has eased right off, with 2ft surf yesterday and light winds. Today has seen a cold front sweeping past the state with initial surf in the 1-2ft range building to 2-3ft during the a’noon under fresh SW-SSW winds.

This weekend and next week (Jul 29 - Aug 5)

No change to the f/cast outlook. The current front weakens overnight and moves rapidly away, with a following zonal front bringing a W to NW flow over the Island tomorrow. Expect size early in the 2ft range to rapidly ease back to tiny surf during the day.

High pressure rapidly moves off the NSW Coast early next week, driving a N’ly flow off the South Coast into Bass Strait. Unfortunately, this fetch is now disjointed and rapidly shifts to the NW through Mon. That will see only small levels of NE windswell jn the 1-2ft range through Sun a’noon, peaking Mon with a few 2ft sets as winds shift NW to W/NW. A few clean little peaks are on offer.

Surf bottoms out Tues before another, broader N’ly fetch develops off Bass Strait as a decaying low pressure approaches from the Bight(see below). That sees another round of NE windswell build Wed, potentially into the 2-3ft range, peaking Thurs with 3ft sets , before easing as winds swing W again.

N'ly fetch developing off Bass Strait and adjacent to the Island generates NE windswell Wed/Thurs

Into the end of next week and this mobile, troughy pattern continues into the weekend, suggesting more small NE windswell later next week, unlikely to exceed 2ft.

Check back Mon for the latest and have a great weekend!
