Eastern Tasmanian Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Mon July 25th)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • E/NE groundswell fills in Sun with light winds
  • Better quality E/NE groundswell on the radar for next week, Mon, peaking Tues/Wed and shifting E to SE as low drifts down from Coral Sea
  • Lingering SE swell Thurs/Fri with mostly offshore winds
  • Small surf over the weekend and into next week

Recap

Fun waves over the weekend with 3ft of NE windswell Sat, building into the 3-4ft range Sun. Today has seen longer period E/NE swell arrive with some 4ft+ sets under continuing N to NE winds.

This week and next week (Jul 25 - Aug 5)

Lovely looking map this morning with the weekend’s Coral Sea low low lingering near the North Island, having intensified overnight. Current ASCAT (satellite windspeed) pass shows storm force winds embedded in a larger fetch of SE-ESE gales to severe gales aimed back at the Eastern Seaboard including Tasmania. That will maintain quite elevated wave heights from a favourable direction for Eastern Tas through most of the week with supporting pulses arriving from the S during the week as a more typical winter pattern of cold fronts pushes into the Tasman, bringing a mostly offshore flow through the region.

In the short run and tomorrow looks fantastic as long period E/NE swell pulses to 4-5ft biggest during the day, with winds shifting NW then W as a front crosses the state, forming a small low off the NSW Central Coast.

Another pulse of more E’ly angled swell is expected Wed with winds variable to W’ly under the influence of a trough then weak front. Sets should be in the 5-6ft range Wed before easing during the a’noon.

This pulses eases right back Thurs with leftovers from the E/SE to SE in the 2-3ft range easing through the day and light offshore winds.

By Friday we’ll be mopping up the last of the SE swell, with a few 2ft sets on offer under light winds from the W.

Into the weekend and only small levels of leftover surf are expected - 1-2ft Sat and tiny on Sunday so make sure you get in this week.

The first week of August is looking quiet with rapid cold fronts passing well to the S with mostly zonal (W-E) fetches. That will see just small levels of S swell, under 2ft expected for the first week of Aug.

Check back Wed and we’ll have a fresh update.
