Eastern Tasmanian Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri July 22nd)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Fun NE windswell Sat with N'ly winds
  • E/NE groundswell fills in Sun with light winds
  • Better quality E/NE groundswell on the radar for next week, Mon, peaking Tues/Wed as low drifts down from Coral Sea
  • Lingering SE swell Thurs/Fri

Recap

Small surf since the last notes with S’ly leftovers in the 2ft range yesterday and light N’ly winds. Today has seen a small N’ly windswell develop in the 1-2ft range with mod/fresh N/NE winds developing as high pressure slides to the East of Tasmania.

This weekend and next week (Jul 22 - 29)

East Coast or hybrid low is now drifting towards Fraser Island, anchored by a huge high (1038hPa) just east of Tasmania. That’s directing gales towards SEQLD, and a broad fetch of E/SE winds as far south as the Hunter. The system tracks SE over the weekend, aiming up gales more directly at temperate NSW to Tasmania before deepening in a form of extra-tropical transition through Sun/Mon and then slowly weakening through Tues. The low lingers near the South Island with swell generating fetch aimed towards Tasmania.

Ex Coral Sea low with well aimed fetch for Tasmania's East Coast

No change to the weekend f/cast. Developing NE windswell through Sat with size building to 3-4ft under mod/fresh NNE winds.

Sunday sees a mix of  NE groundswell and NE windswell with continuing mod N’ly winds as the high pressure drifts further E. Expect size in the 2-3ft range and some fun waves.

Bigger NE-E/NE groundswell arrives Mon with size building into the 4-5ft range and winds tending light as a trough moves NE of the state.

That size holds though Tues-Wed- or even a notch above in the 4-6ft range- offering up fantastic potential under light winds Tues, with winds tending more W’ly Wed as a weak front crosses the state.

Size eases Thurs but holds at fun levels from the E-SE, before rebuilding a notch Fri as surf from the ESE generated under the South Island makes landfall. That should see some leftover 3-4ft sets Thurs morning easing during the day before 2–3ft surf rounds off the working week.

Expect an easing trend and small weekend 30/31 July.

Check back Mon for a full update and have a great weekend!
