Between the Rain Showers

The coast of SE Queensland has been buffetted by rain for what seems the best part of January. The weather system causing the deluge is broad and slow moving, but fortunately it's also been creating a bit of swell - albeit wind-affected swell.

Queensland photog Jack Dekort has been dodging the showers and shooting whenever the sun makes a rare glimpse through the clouds. This batch of photos were all shot over the last two weeks in a rain-sodden Sunshine State. The surfers include Seb Wilson, Mitch Adams, Harrison Roach and Jackson Winter.

Lei Day 4 - Volcom Pipeline Pro

The organisers of the Volcom Pipeline Pro have been handed an ideal waiting period. The North Shore is seeing an abundance of swell and the organisers plan to pick the eyes out of it. Hence today, with Pipe pumping at six feet, they canned it for better surf. The next big swell hits in two days so the opening hooter should blow soon enough.

Tom Carey was on hand for another action packed lei day at Pipe.

Lei Day 2 - Volcom Pipeline Pro

The second Lei Day was called today at the Volcom Pipeline Pro as organisers wait for swell to arrive. Two swells are due in the waiting period with the second swell expected to be in the 10 foot+ range. Today however, competitors got gymnastic on the small Backdoor waves.

Summery Justice

For surfers Perth can be a hot, flat and wretched place in summer. The months drag and the Doctor blows, all the while the surf trickles to shore over shapeless banks. Salvation lies a few hours north or south or at the bar at the Ocean Beach Hotel. On the weekend however, Perth surfers scored their just desserts - the pay off for enduring the painful summer months.

Matt Cooper was on hand to film the local lads letting loose their frustrations.

The Unusual Suspects

Anyone not living on the Gold Coast could be forgiven for thinking the waves are limited to just D'Bah, the Superbank, Burleigh, and Straddie, and that the only surfers are the Cooly kids and their stickered up brethren. Well, here's one for the other guys. Yesterday, local photog, Grant Davis, trained his lens in a different direction and caught Nick Baxter, Clinton Shipsey and Rowan Walker rearranging the furniture at a lesser known Gold Coast spot.

Door to Door

Here's a few shots of Grant Molony's commute to work the other day. After walking out his front door he's nabbed by brother Russ for a few sly ones at the local before rushing in to open the door of the surfshop he works at. Sure beats the morning grind.

Hollow and Hypnotic

Gold Coast photographer, Ryan Williams, is spending three months on Simeulue Island off northern Sumatra. Here's his latest photographic dispatch, taken over the Christmas and New Year period. Looks a little quieter than the Goldy...

Jamie Sterling and Kalani Chapman in a pinch

"I thought you were going right!"

Hawaiian Jamie Sterling drops into an outer reef bomb setting a line for the barrel as Kalani Chapman pulls up behind him. The wave pinches so Kalani hits the ejector button while Jamie braces to take the lip square on the head. It's all over, from the first stroke to the final curtain, in eight seconds.

And for the self-righteous folk ready to lecture Jamie on surf etiquette, save you're bile. The two are friends and have sinced joked about the wave.

Screen grabs from Jamie's GoPro camera.

P-Pass: Not so quiet on the western front

Since Christmas the island of Pohnpei, sitting out in the Western Pacific, has received a succession of strong storm swells. Allois Malfatani who runs Pohnpei Surf Club has been marvelling at the consistency. Although big swells are rare in that part of the world there's been plenty of six foot days at P-Pass for the locals and guests alike, and the maps are forecasting more to come.

Surfing's Great Leap Forward

In the world of surfing, and especially the business of surfing, China is the great untapped market. Although it has only a relatively small coastline open to swell it's the sheer number of people that has surfing administrators delighted. Almost thirty years after Peter Drouyn first took surfing behind the bamboo curtain it finally appears to be catching a foothold. Even if local surfers are slow on the uptake businessmen and dignitaries are closely eyeing the potential.
