Northern Reprieve

With the Coral Sea in an active state all eyes have been trained on the Queensland points. In Coolangatta it's contest singlets, cameras, and serious competition with the Quiksilver Pro heading into its final day. Further north, however, things have been moving at a slightly more leisurely pace. Yeah, the Noosa points have been crowded, and yeah, the Noosa Festival of Surfing has brought many hot surfers into town, but the vibe is a few notches below that down at Cooly - it always is

Getting Festive

The planets are aligning. The ducks are in a row. The show is ready to roll. Yep, the Noosa Festival of Surfing is set to start this weekend, and wouldn't you know it, Tropical Cyclone Sandra was named and framed this morning. The Category 1 'clone will slowly move toward the coast squeezing a high pressure ridge as she goes. And that, my friends, means waves, especially at Noosa where the orientation will provide protection from the wind. Let the logging begin.

Not So Sunny Coast

Here, Jack puts his imune system to the test, while also baiting himself in the bush to those sneaky blood suckers, all to capture these grey but moody images from the not so Sunny Coast.

Sunny Coast All Over

Once the rain cleared it was all cicadas and bottle green foliage on the Sunshine Coast. And surf, there was plenty of surf too.

Jack Dekort did the Sunny Coast rounds in the wake of the Cyclone Oswald event and found waves a'plenty with surfers to match: Julian Wilson, Harry Bryant, Dane Peterson, amongst others.

Noosa Heads

Noosa Heads - it's the first place to feel a new north-east swell and it's ridable under all but the most extreme and persistent northerly storms.

Unfortunately that's just what the storm associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald was. All long weekend the surf was huge but ripped apart by a rogue northely wind. On Tuesday and Wednesday it started to settle though the wind still wasn't ideal for classic Noosa. The conditions were, however, ideal for punting and Wade Goodall, Julian Wilson, Jake Colreavy and co boosted into the wind.

Z to the A

While the crowds flocked to the Sunny Coast points Ziggy Alberts saw in the New Year with a solo session on a beachie not far from home.

Heaven before Evan

Despite all the wrath and destruction Tropical Cyclone Evan caused in the South Pacific it had only a minimal impact on Australia's East Coast. A combination of distance and lack of a significant pressure gradient meant the swell didn't have the spread or magnitude one may expect from a severe, slow moving cyclone.

This Time Yesterday

This time yesterday the first lines in a very long time rolled around the Noosa points. The swell didn't catch anyone by surprise and it was a people zoo from Granites to First Point, as it also is today and will be at this time tomorrow.

On The Road

Empty peaks, wooden homesteads, and pineapple fields, Jack Dekort and Kelly Norris have been roaming the NSW North Coast with no fixed agenda. Here are some of the sights along the way...

Polishing Turds

"This time of the year all the sunny coast surfers begin to question their sanity! The blue bottles line the shore and the hot northerly winds blow relentless, plus coral spawn stinks out the town. With hope the Coral Sea will start to shine big blobs in the near future, but for now there's not much a sunny coast surfer can do other than make use of the slop on offer."

Mitch Adams and Ziggy Alberts do the polishing, Jack Dekort provides the photos and the woe-is-me words.

Easy Fiji

Even away from the marquee breaks like Restaurants and Cloudbreak Fiji is a worthwhile trip. And even when the swell isn't coming out of the sky it's great place to visit.

Swellnet photographer, Jack Dekort, gets into the tropical spirit, shooting in the clear water and mixing wth the locals at the market, during a trip to Fiji.
