Drug Aware Pro Margaret River: Day 2 Photos

Hard to avoid the cliches when describing the events at the Margaret River Pro yesterday, so let's tick 'em off: big swell, surfers rising to the occasion, action packed, drama a'plenty...have I missed any?

Still, it was good webcast watching, what with the big swell and surfers rising to the occasion and all.

Keramas

The worst kept secret in surfing is now official: Keramas will become the fifth stop on the 2013 World Championship Tour. The black sand beach on Bali's east side is known as a consistent, high-performance wave with plenty of ramps and pockets creating ample opportunities for the world's best to cut loose. For the last four years Oakley has held the World Pro Juniors at Keramas with 2013 being the first year as WCT status.

The following photos are a selection from the last two Oakley Pro Juniors, won by Davey Cathels in 2011 and Jack Freestone on 2012.

Volcom Fiji Pro Finals Day

18.57, 19.50 and 18.16.

The numbers don't lie, Kelly Slater's last three heat scores in the Volcom Fiji Pro are testamant to his dominance today. His semi final performance was verging on absurd and if you didn't watch it live then you should get yourself over to heats on demand to see an old dog pulling new tricks.

Volcom Fiji Pro Round 5 & Quarters

Here's hoping the old adage that a picture tells a thousand words is true cos I've got no words to write about today's competition. Didn't watch a second of it. Long weekend holiday, you see. It's pretty small where I am. Cold and wet too. Looks much better in these photos. The end.

Volcom Fiji Pro Rounds 3 & 4

With a shift in wind the organisers of the Volcom Fiji Pro took the competition to Restaurants for Rounds 3 & 4. In stark contrast to yesterdays moving mountains today offered up relative molehills. Albeit, four foot and hollow molehills. Yeah, stupid analogy...

Anyway, it was smaller, it was perfect, and three 10 point rides were scored. For full details click here.

Volcom Fiji Pro Laydays

Tough life waiting on a tropical for a big swell to hit. The activities are limited: surf six foot Cloudbreak, tan your inner thighs, play bocce, or get roaring drunk. If you're Facebook friends with any of 'the boys' you've probably seen them doing the latter. The notorious skulldrag being the drink of choice.

But in the interest of responsible drinking and good public relations here are the G rated, ASP-endorsed photos from the Volcom Fiji Pro laydays.

Volcom Fiji Pro Round 2

There are only two photos in this batch that don't feature barrels, likewise there were only two waves ridden all morning that a surfer didn't get barrelled on. Actually, that's bullshit...the last couple of heats were stinkers with inconsistent waves and a light northerly onshore. But up till then...woo yeah, barrels!

Volcom Fiji Pro Round 1

Kelly Slater got poked by a last minute Mitch Coleborn pit, Flores the Flowerful notched up the highest scoring wave, and plenty of competitors didn't make double figures for their two wave total. Cloudbreak was perfect for Round 1 of the Volcom Fiji Pro but it was also shifty and inconsistent, experience and a hearty dose of luck went hell of a long way.

The Wind Beneath Kelly's Wings

Taj has Johnny. Parko has Louie. Kelly has a big bald bloke sporting a red-tinged goatee and servo sunnies to deliver him a quick pat on the bum before he goes into battle. Seems to be working for him...

The Best Layday in Surfing History

The Billabong Pro Tahiti was put on hold yesterday as waves up to 7 metres (25 feet) washed through the contest site of Teahupoo. The swell was first forecast a week ago and since then the world's best big wave riders - including Australians, Dylan Longbottom, Laurie Towner, Ryan Hipwood and Anthony Walsh - had begun assembling at Teahupoo. Once the contest announcement was made the most anticipated layday in surfing history got underway.
