Slater to Compete in Australia
Long before COVID came along, Kelly Slater has used social media to argue about the efficacy of vaccinations and various vax issues. Much of the time the debates were sport; positions were assumed, ideas were thrashed out to see if they hold water or not.
His readiness to adopt a position led commenters, and even some Australian politicians, to assume he held the same position - i.e as he dislikes vaccinations and surrounding policy he wouldn't get vaccinated. In January both Minister for Sport Richard Colbeck and Senator Jacquie Lambie singled him out as unvaccinated and hence unable to enter the country.
Recently, however, Slater unsurprisngly put the kybosh on the idea that he wasn't vaccinated and couldn't enter Australia.
"I'll see you in Australia," Slater told Reuters from Hawaii. Asked directly if he'd been vaccinated, Slater answered, "It is an important question, and there's a reason I'm not talking about it that is personal. I do believe that medical privacy is a real thing. But I think my answer that I'll see you in Australia answers that."
"I'm planning on surfing the rest of the tour," Slater said. "You know, I'm not thinking about twelve (titles). I mean it's in the back of my mind and having a win under my belt, if I get a couple more good results then yeah I'll make that top five... I'll deal with that challenge when I get there, if I make it that far."
However, in a separate interview with the WSL, Slater proved that he indeed he was thinking about twelve:
"I know I have work to do [to contend for the World Tile]. I'm nowhere close to it. I know I gotta put in a lot of work between now and the end of the year. I know I gotta make that top five. I'd like to try to win a couple of contests this year now that I have that confidence back and the understanding of how to do that and the belief that it can happen … and getting to Trestles is -- it would be -- a bittersweet finish for me. You know, eventually this is gonna end. Eventually this is gonna end and there will be some sadness, but I'll also be relieved."
In the same interview, Slater ruminated on the symmetry of finishing at Trestles:
"I could imagine Trestles being the perfect place because it's where I won my first competition after going pro. My very first pro win was there in 1990 on the PSAA contents. I was still in high school, I was starting my first week of my senior year, my last week in high school was that week, and I won $30,000 and it was just such a dream come true to start my career. So, it would be a nice place to finish for me also if I chose for it to be my last contest, if I make it to the Final 5."

His performance at Pipeline was the most legendary performance in surfing history. From my perspective I don't understand why he wouldn't retire after that and end with an absolute mic drop.

1) Arguing about a principle isn't the same as acting on the principle.
2) Anti-vaxers claiming him as one of their own forget that Slater is the most competitive surfer that ever did compete. The only side he's on is his own.
I'm vaxxed. But I actually don't like the precedent of mandating a vaccine that doesn't eliminate the virus. Instead, if you're not vaccinated and you get covid and need an ICU bed, you should be at the bottom of the priority list, below cancer patients etc. That's actually fair. Personal choices. Why should a vaccinated cancer patient lose out on an ICU bed to an otherwise healthy muppet who made a selfish personal choice not to get vaccinated. You should be free to say no to a vaccine and free to die on the sidewalk outside the hospital too as a consequence too. Personal choice, personal responsibility.

The truth is most people in ICU for Covid are unfortunately compromised outside of their control or obese, the latter being the majority. I have that on very good authority. MSM however of course does not provide a daily breakdown in case numbers. So.........should people presenting at ICU for Covid be put on the scales, pinch tested and screened for BMI also before receiving treatment? That question is equally important to your point.
