Harley revs up on home beach for Gromtag win
Harley Ross-Webster has led the Curl Curl Boardriders to victory in the Aloha Manly Style Gromtag. Ross-Webster teamed up with his older brother Corey, Will Sloman, Ed Aubrey and Ben Walsh to come from behind and steal the win from defending champions Elouera Boardriders. Sandon Point posted their best ever Gromtag result finishing in third position with North Narrabeen fourth.
Ross-Webster scored the highest individual wave score of the final – 7.67 on his opening wave and backed it up with 3.27 on his Dakine Powerwave (Double Points) for a combined score of 14.20. Elouera’s Nathan Martin was the only surfer in the final to score higher than Ross-Webster with 18.53. Curl Curl’s two Under 14 surfers Ed Aubrey (11.07) and Ben Walsh (11.03) out scored their opponents at the back end of the fifty-minute final with smart wave selection proving the difference. “It was a fantastic comp thanks to Aloha Manly Style for putting it on. We were so excited to be competing on our home break and are super stoked to take the win,” Ross-Webster said. “We only had one training session so it was awesome to see that we could pull it together and improve on our Semi Final finish from last year. It was so good to compete with my brother Corey, we are super close so it made it even better to share the win with him.”
Elouera started strongly thanks to Nathan Martin but his fellow teammates couldn’t go on with the job falling off on almost every wave ridden. Sandon Point proved to be the surprise packet of the event sneaking thru Quarter Final No.3 ahead of Cronulla and then winning Semi Final No.2 over Curl Curl, North Steyne and Queenscliff. North Narrabeen had an unhappy final with all five surfers falling off on their Dakine Powerwave’s. Kai Warner and Riley Cadman had posted big scores during the earlier rounds but ran out of steam in the final.
The event had been postponed on Saturday due to big stormy surf with competitors greeted with pumping conditions at North Curl Curl on Sunday. The swell still had plenty of size but had cleaned up offering great scoring potential for some of NSW best juniors. Merewether’s Jackson Baker scored a near perfect 28.53 out of a possible 30 to post the events highest combined score in Quarter Final No.2. Baker excelled in the chunky conditions opening up with 9.67 followed by a 9.43 on his Dakine Powerwave. Baker won a $200 prize pack from Dakine for the best Powerwave.
Maroubra and Merewether posted massive scores in their Quarter Final but were unable to match Elouera and North Narrabeen in Semi Final No.1 with Merewether going down by less than two points. North Steyne and Queenscliff suffered slow starts in Semi Final No.2 and were never in the mix against Sandon Point and Curl Curl. North Steyne finished ahead of Queenscliff taking home a fifth placing overall.
