Hi All

Ive just taken posession of a new car which will be my primary surf wagon. It has a electronic key fob thingee that automatically opens the car as soon as its in range. Unfortunately for me im one of those guys who puts the key under the wheel arch when i go surfing, but now that option is no longer open to me as the car will be open the whole time cuz the key is close by.

Any advice from modern car owners on ths forum here ? Do i hide it in the sand 50m away ? Do i wrap it in tin foil?

Cheers! Richard

Test your key around and under to see where the signal is blocked. With mine I lock it in a key safe that is locked onto the snatch/tow rings under the engine at the front of the vehicle. Doors won’t open with key in that spot.

Does the door have a key hole? A lot of electronic keys have a surf/sports key that can be removed and it makes the electronic key inoperable. I have a prado and the door key part comes out of the electronic bit. Best thing ever.

If you use a key lock attached to your car and the car is stolen insurance won’t pay for theft as a key lock is easy to access.

Try wrapping it in alfoil - should prevent any signal getting from the key to the car.

Does it come with an ordinary key as well to open the door ? I have a mazda with fob key and inside is a key which I use to manually lock the door with fob left inside the car . The car can’t be started if someone smashed the window and tried to start the car with fob as the manual key is needed to open the door first and overrides the system. I attach the key to my boardshorts /wetsuit.
