Balls of steel @etarip. The adrenaline must have been surging in that first half hour but he stared it in the face and fought it down. What a warrior.

When he went for that ramp shot (that he missed) in the 3rd over I thought he would settle down or it would be a short innings!

well, guess i was wrong!

haha i was texting my cricket mad sister saying "stop doing that...not against Bumrah".
One over later i was texting saying....'keep doing that...AGAINST BUMBRAH!" hahaha.
That was remarkable. 60 in the first 20 overs of a debut on boxing day.
What just happened.

Seems to be very aggressive of late.

^ dunno but I like the interview with johnny konstas, where they happily pointed out that sam did very well to ruffle Kohli.. drew attention to how those that sledge are usually a bit worried and insecure about their team/ their own performance.

True true @basesix. Must be noted the commentators have said several times that Kohli is on the angry pills.
Speak volumes to me.
Something aint right with poor ol Virat. Kinda feel for him.

Shades of late career Adam Gilchrist.

Loved those close ups of Sammy's face as Bumrah was running in. Curled lip, muttering to himself, classic Hollywood villain characteristics, except he's one of ours so he can't be a villain.

Southernraw. Merry Xmas also.

The two Turtles, Bill & Ben, are in now.

How can one guy (Konstas) see them like basketballs and now these two look so jittery and nervous and not having a go. Since Konstas we’ve put on 75, we should be moving along and really applying the pressure on the scoreboard,Matthew Hayden style. Frustrating.
Bumrah is bowling no better than earlier, if anything probably easier to hit him. We are just too scared to have a go.AW

@stunet loved that too. Looked like he was saying 'see ball, hit ball'.
Haha heroe's in a half shell @AW!
Actually the way i've been reading this innings is the boys holding the ship, steady as she goes, a dogged second session, what is completely required in a test match.
They have 5 days. There's gonna be near misses. But hang in there, make a few runs. Grind them down. The temp is rising. It's gonna absolutely wear the indians into a sweaty puddle in the middle of the MCG.
As fine a morning of Test cricket as i've seen in eons by the Aussies.
We've negated our weakness. Early collapses!
Looking at all our top 3 making half centuries.
Brilliant!

Agree.
We do need steady play but Bumrah in his last 8 overs bowled lemon cheesecakes, balls waist high just outside off, almost wides on a few occasions not real fast , Bill & Ben just tap them to silly mid on or off instead of carting them to the fence. Safe play like they are playing to hold their position in the team, looks like cricket for individuals from my perspective. Just my opinion. AW

Wear them down.
It's only gonna get hotter.
The day is only going to get longer.
The runs are going to slowly keep building.
Morale will drop.
Fatigue will set in.
Kohli might start punching on the way he's going.
It's been all class in my opinion.
It's not bigbash!

I’ll keep the faith, you should be a cricket scribe, you’ve summed it up well.
I guess I just got intoxicated by the Konstas fury, got my endorphins pumping, they’re obviously wearing off, as evident in my cricket comments. Go Boys. AW

Nostradamus, our players are doing exactly what you stated, put the foot down.
Can’t wait to see Boland in action. He should’ve been played in Brisbane, play no injured players, Hazelwood bowled 6 overs for the game.
Boland would’ve fired.

What’s the crystal ball showing now , Richie?
Kawaja gave his wicket away, as did Marnus, now Head.

The bowling hasn’t really been that good. Only one guy went out due to a good ball for a back leg LBW. (Konstas) . We just keep fucking up, again.
These guys simply don’t know how to play straight batting anymore , it’s always across the line, very risky. Konstas played many straight bat shots. AW

Crystal ball is saying if Oz get past 300,..you'd expect India to get somewhere close, i'd say we're in for 5 day test match epic.
One for the ages.
Already is so far.

No idea on the winner yet. Way too early.

Just in a quiet period, i posed a question (do it every christmas day) to my mum and sister about a) who is the greatest Australian batsmen ever? b) who is the greatest Australian bowler of all time and c) who is the greatest player ever in the world.
I left them with that question and this morning we had a phone conference.
The answers were.
We all agreed Australias greatest batsman was Ricky Ponting....but we also accepted there's alot of cricket we never saw so it's a flawed conclusion.
We all agreed Shane Warne was the greatest Australian bowler of all time. Derrr.
We deviated on the final one. Sis said she couldn't split the best player of all time so went with Warne, Lara and Tendulkar. And you know what. I couldn't argue with that especially based on legacy and statistics!
Mum was 100percent Warne which i thought was so punk rock of her and made me so proud of her as my mum.
I went with Ponting as greatest cricketer ever due to his batting and his fielding. Punter was like a great white shark in the field. Never missed the stumps and got so many wickets for australia, on top of his batting, captaincy and character. Second for me and probably equal second to Bradman was Tendulkar. I just think that guy was a magician.
If smithy keeps going with is career and continues on his new found form..i'll happily put him to number 1.
Thoughts on others best ever??

southernraw's picture
southernraw's picture
southernraw Thursday, 26 Dec 2024 at 5:36pm

And yeah, it's a very flawed question because we missed about 80years of cricket in our lifetimes and there's no footage to observe...so with that in mind.....

I'd vote Aussie southpaw bowler Ray Bright for 'most absorbing', I had a scanlens cricket sticker of him (a foil!) that made it look like he had 2 right hands, i.e. 10 fingers on his non-bowling hand. Used to look at that sticker a lot.
edit: think I found it.. it's on the green page with lillee in the background:

Smith is very frustrating to watch, the amount of singles from poor balls that could’ve been greater scores does my head in.
He’s playing too safe. Give it a crack son !!

Hard to give an answer to your question for the reasons you’ve stated, there’s been so much cricket before our time. AW
