The United States(!) of A
Hey Roady. Yes, there IS a vast middle ground. It is under served, kinda like the only well behaved kid in the family of five. It is called The Silent Majority. Remember the 2022 Midterm Elections? Pundits and Politicos calling for a Red Wave? Landslide Republican victories? Didn't happen. The Silent Majority spoke. They tend to reserve their opinions to the ballot box. So, no, Trump is not a shoo in. He was ahead in the polling last week and is sure to get a big, late election cycle bump from this. If you made me bet my own money on it, i'd bet Trump, but shoo-in? Maybe that's just me, Roady. I have a thing about staying present. The election is months away. The emotions of this week will (maybe) be present but cooled like a pie on a sill. I mentioned hysterical language yesterday, and the wisdom in avoiding it. It is not just consigned to violent rhetoric and the like, it can include more inane things like calling an election months ahead of time.
The comments about Trump playing golf, and what a a**hole move that would be? Yeah, Trump is of low character. His base has decided they will live with that, cuz he is their guy. They will literally say that. Any MAGA reading those types of commentary on him.. it just strengthens their support of him.
I know.
Childish and sick, but, there it is.

your points above were poignant, @wax, when the Li'l Bush was criticised for continuing reading to kids, after hearing about the Twin Towers, I had left-wing friends responding with 'what should he have done? leapt up like an ineffective turkey?' - for a slow thinker like him, collecting his thoughts and aligning his internal chess pieces in the calm of an elementary classroom.. makes a sense of sorts.
Attacking people never works in an influencing way (or maybe it does now?). Mike Moore just made people think what they already thought and wonder if his points were as good as he thought they were. Certainly would be even more the case in the current climate. People will make what they will of things.. no new thinks, fer sure. Did you get through your cert update units?

The Slow-Motion Assassination
Self-described guardians of democracy spent years creating a lethal atmosphere around Donald Trump
MATT TAIBBI
" ..But we live in a physical world, and individuals still matter. Official actions betray this more than anything else. When a populist movement built on frustration over decades of misrule began having electoral success, they created a legend that the backlash was irrational and the fault of one Donald Trump, building him into a figure of colossal art, a super-Hitler. It became cliché that he was the embodiment of all evil and needed to be stopped “at all costs.” By late last year, mainstream press organizations were saying legal means had failed, and more or less openly calling for a truly final solution to the Trump problem.
Now he’s been shot, in an incident that’s left two dead. We don’t exactly know why yet. We barely know the “who,” as stories about slain 20-year-old suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks are citing investigations into “whether the shooter had accomplices,” as NBC put it. New York Times analysts say the gunman fired eight shots. That’s a lot of rage, and even if we don’t know its direct source, it can’t have been much lower than what was already in the air around Trump. He and his supporters have been dehumanized as part of an induced collective madness that’s a bigger crime than the coverup of Biden’s incapacity:.."
I wanna go on the squirrel ride.
Roadkill wrote:Wax24, what’s the words you are hearing? Is Trump now a shoo in for President?
I’ve listened to a few left leaning podcasts with clearly Democratic supporters and a few right leaning podcasts with Republican supporters but can’t find any middle of the road podcasts. It’s all just extremes on either side. Is there a large middle ground in the US?
Would be interested if you think things can get better if opposing sides can’t look at themselves as being part of the problem? Both Dems and Republicans need to acknowledge their language and inflammatory rhetoric before things can get better?
Can Trump bring your country together and govern for all?
Sorry for not responding to all of these questions earlier, Roady. That last one is the doozie. I think that Trump could do that. His base won't listen to anyone. Not to Biden. Not to Reason. But if he told them to tone it down... that'd work. And, unlike the nuts who won't listen to Biden, the nuts who normally won't listen to Trump, WILL listen to Reason. And, i read where his mood yesterday in an interview seemed changed. That an event like this.. that moment he ducked for cover, could catalyze a change. I'll hold my breath, but trauma does have that impact.
It could be that he has long realized that he doesn't have complete control over the beast he created. Look at his face at rallies when he has had to reel in his positions on things like covid, abortion... there have been moments when he has had to bow down to the mob, as it were. He might know that this ride is unsustainable (it is). He may have long been searching for a new schtick, but painted himself into a corner. He may have long been looking for ways to reach across the aisle. Broden his coalition. Find a more sustainable way to keep power. All just speculation, Roady. But a fantastic question. So far, he got up and yelled "fight!" five times with clenched fist. Not the direction i was just goin on about, hey? But, maybe that was the emotion of the trauma of the moment with extra adrenaline, please. We will all see soon enough.

Its going to be really interesting seeing where things go from here.
1. Its gotten Biden out of the media spot light, does that take pressure off him to stand down?
2. Yeah expect it might change how both parties approach things, strangely for now at least Trump has become a kind of victim rather than villian, they will have to be careful how they go after him and paint him.
And yeah Trump might change his approach a little.
3. Predicting the Trump rallies will only get bigger now, but obviously security ramped right up.
4. The raised fist has been used as a symbol all through history by both left and right but in recent years more a BLM thing, but i have a funny feeling its now going to be the symbol of the maga crowd, although more the whole trump and raised fist silhouette.
The run up and election was always going to be interesting but it just got even more interesting.
....surely donny has seen the light ;)

There is plenty of articles on its history but here is a recent one.
"Trump’s raised fist - how one gesture can be used by Republicans, socialists, fascists, white supremacists and Black athletes"
https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-raised-fist-one-gesture-122607558.html
Like i said its been used through history by both left and right, but the most recent movement to use it has been BLM (not sure why you think this is funny? Is it not true?)
Im predicting the MAGA crowd will start using it though, so if they do we might see its meaning in popular culture shift?

Dunno if it’ll last, Syp, but it’s the best way forward. I’m hoping it just took this to shake the “leaders” (both sides) outta their slumber.
I’m not holding my breath.
When i’m rootin for a sports team, i don’t throw up the white flag til it’s mathematically impossible. Was that way when i played, too. This rootin for the temp to be lowered, not just temporarily, feels like rootin for a team that does have a chance, albeit a small one.
@Indo @Syp…… i have disagreed with each of you, at times vehemently, in the near past, here. I have enjoyed your input the last few pages. I am a bit reading between the lines now, but, things you have both said raise, to me, an interesting question.
Is the beast still on a leash?
To flesh that out, can the “leaders” (both sides) hold any sway, at this point, in trying to lower the temperature? Or has the pot already overboiled?
What can each side do to lower the temp? This would mostly be in the realm of rhetoric. Mostly.
To all..,,, what does each side have to gain/lose from lowering temp?
These questions dwarf other ones like “how the heck could a thing like that happen?!”
Those will get answered, in time, more time than is tolerable, to a disappointing conclusion.
@Base…. i have missed a coupla chances to respond to you, my apologies.
Thanx for any/all aloha vibes.
I actually didn’t finish all the “certs” that shift. I had to finish em last night, while talkin with y’all. I got em done 4 mins before swipe out. (yes, we refer to coming off shift, in this hospital, anyway, as a “swipe out.” Y’all don’t know how many times i’ve had some version of “swipe out>wipeout” in my head as i leave the facility. I think some think i need a bed there myself.)
Anyways, it was great to leave today knowing i was golden for another 365 spins.
Thanx so much for asking!
(ok… jelly…. i know i’ve been pie in the sky. gimme a break. my pres-elect has been shot!)

Maybe have a look at the division in views/increased partisanship that led up to the US Civil War as an allegory (not that one is predetermined, now). I've seen it said that political views are now as extreme as they've been since then. How did views diverge then? What were the topics that caused division - abolition, different economies? At what point did the partisanship become so distinct, and the centre ground so collapse, that saw events lead up to the leaving of whole states and the setup of the Confederacy and it's own Congress? Was there a point at which compromise was achievable and things could have been brought back from the brink?
basesix wrote:^ hanoverghk's comment is quite romantic:

Highly ulikely he was really a Republican supporter.
So why register as a Republican?
To vote for the presidental canandate for the primarys with some parties including Rebulicans you need to register with the party to vote and have a say on what leader goes into the election race.
Other parties like the Democrats you dont need to be registered to able to vote in primarys.
So his aim would have likely been to vote for someone other than Trump in the primarys in the hope that Trump didnt get up and be able to run for president.
Dude also gave money at least once to a left leaning poltical organisation.
BTW. Not 100% sure but this might vary from state to state, but in his state its the case.

I bet Burls would like to take out Trump - candle lit dinner, a few cocktails, maybe a bit of handholding, with Burleigh's masculine paw engulfing Trump's more delicate offering.
