Just looking at a series of photos on The Guardian about overpopulation and overconsumption. Came across this dude getting shacked by rubbish (and a fair bit of seaweed). Maybe the pic is well known but it's the first time I've seen it. Great image.

Not sure how to link pictures the way you guys do, sorry.

Whenever I walk off a beach I always pick up some rubbish. No big deal many do it but I'm amazed at numbers of surfers who are blind to the rubbish on their local.

@stu /ben perhaps a story on the good work some of those voluntary groups do like clean coast collective would be good. Lots of groups here in Australia and world wide do similar work.

Only way to stay clean is to make the barrel I guess!

Be good if we can make waste plastic valuable so that this stuff represents money. I have heard of technologies converting plastic rubbish to oil, thermopolymerisation or something, so maybe there's hope. Course, using it for oil isn't the greatest thing in the world either, but sea levels that turn Chopes into a crumbly mal wave surely beats getting shacked in plastic!

I think.

Waste sorting & Plastic Recycling Schemes have been binned.
All scream for single use throw in ocean plastic to ward off the virus.
Big oil needs a boost & Corona Quarantine Plastic World just delivered.

Never Waste a good Waste Crisis

Not only tbb had trouble getting Waste data...all other reports are lighter than this
This is an abysmal data Hub for 2nd biggest Crisis of our time...so, sue me!

Lockdowns halted Recycle Counts > Private Contractors won't share Data
World absolves itself from accounting for world's biggest waste pile
Bigger Waste Pits + increased incineration + Medi Waste washing ashore.

Lockdowns resulted in 50% increase in household Rats.

Strict Lockdowns Stage 4-5 produce 30%-70% Less Waste.
Oddly affording better resourcing for increased Med Waste

Stage 1-3 lockdowns spread 50% more packaging & Domestic waste
Oddly have little time for addressing growing Med Waste Crisis (System Collapses)

40% Lockdown Packaging > (Amazon) Buy > Plastics / Extra Grocery Wrap
20% Takeaway Cardboard
40% Plastic Waste (WHO) Use > Masks / Glove / Goggles / Sanitiser Bottles

50% ICU deaths are due to bacteria from contaminated Plastics
Med Waste Comparison: (Corona Bed 2.5-2.8kg waste (vs) Birth 5kg waste)

(Odd Fact) Coronavirus survives longest on Plastic (4 days) & Masks (7 days)
Covid Ban on safer reusable Cloth Bags (2 days) + Stainless Cups (2-3 days)
Recycling / Plant - reductions + Shutdowns > Fewer Pickers.

Food Waste Doubled : Milk / Eggs / Packaged Banana-Tomatoes-Lettuce

Australia / NZ
+10% April > 20% July = Xmas Volume (Plastic Waste Exporters - 1 Vic / 2 Qld)

Med Waste (Toxic Plastics) - Vic Stage 4 (100t > 500t in 2 weeks)
Vic Aged Care - 2 bins/week > 200 bins/week
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-08-20/coronavirus-ppe-piles-up-aged-car...
