Just looking at a series of photos on The Guardian about overpopulation and overconsumption. Came across this dude getting shacked by rubbish (and a fair bit of seaweed). Maybe the pic is well known but it's the first time I've seen it. Great image.
Not sure how to link pictures the way you guys do, sorry.
For the full series of images it came from (and the surfer and photog's name):
That pic of the rubbish tube was a surfing life cover a few years ago . Think its west java.
Here ya go Benski, I remember this well;)
Looks like a fifty dollar note in the roof?
Couple of blue condoms
Poor dede suryana i wonder if he was clean when he was finished surfing that day .
Whenever I walk off a beach I always pick up some rubbish. No big deal many do it but I'm amazed at numbers of surfers who are blind to the rubbish on their local.
@stu /ben perhaps a story on the good work some of those voluntary groups do like clean coast collective would be good. Lots of groups here in Australia and world wide do similar work.
Clean of what Caml, Herpes, VD, or just darn right skank in the water.
Only way to stay clean is to make the barrel I guess!
Be good if we can make waste plastic valuable so that this stuff represents money. I have heard of technologies converting plastic rubbish to oil, thermopolymerisation or something, so maybe there's hope. Course, using it for oil isn't the greatest thing in the world either, but sea levels that turn Chopes into a crumbly mal wave surely beats getting shacked in plastic!
