Just wanted to raise the attention to the PEMEX oil spill which occurred a several weeks ago in Salina Cruz. Neither the Mexican government, nor Pemex, has been taking any action and the spill went uncontained for 11 days. It poses a serious threat to thousands of nesting sea turtles and has been contaminating some of the best surf spots in mainland Mexico (and all of Central America for that matter). The oil continues to creep north towards Puerto Escondido.
A corrupt government together with the oil monopoly, have managed to keep the issue pretty quiet and there is not a lot of information available online. The most accurate representation of the effects are found through the Puerto-based facebook page below which includes regular updates and photos from local surf camp operators
