Shark Stories

A few interesting stories on shark attacks and near misses on the Shark Shield report so I thought I would start this thread. Don't want to trivialize the subject as people have had their lives taken or changed forever by what can happen. I thought it might serve as an educational purpose by hearing others experiences so we may all learn from them and hopefully avoid it happening to us.

One of them was a mate of mine named Hazey.
He had been surfing at Castles, a notoriously sharky wave in the bay at Cactus.
Several hundred metres offshore the wave breaks before reforming into Inside Castles making a long left with several sections. The wave has been the scene of several attacks and near misses over the years including the local known as "Sharkbait" who had been attacked more than once.
Gerry Lopez is another who came very close to being attacked out there and vowed to never surf Cactus again after his near miss.
Well Hazey was surfing out the back with another bloke named Steve when out of the blue he was launched into the air still on his board by a huge force from below.
A shark had rammed him with a direct hit straight up into the air! In a moment it was gone but soon returned to the stunned Hazey and started biting him and his board. Hazey instinctively put his arms out to protect himself but both his arms ended up in its mouth. As the jaws closed down his arms could have easily been severed, but several teeth on the sharks lower jaw had become dislodged and imbedded in the board leaving his upper arms with massive injuries, but the vital inner arms where major arteries run were not majorly damaged. This probably saved his life.
By this time Steve had reacted and in a rush of adrenalin and pure ballsy courage he threw himself onto the sharks back and started gouging at the sharks eyeballs, eventually feeling one pop and the shark departed.
Steve got the two surfboards together and got himself and Hazey on and started the long paddle to shore.
Then they were both thrown into the air as the shark rammed them a third time before disappearing again. They continued to make their way closer to shore and the shark nudged them again. Steve told me he thought he really must of pissed it off when he popped its eye.
Finally they we're just a metre from shore when the shark made its fifth and final appearance. It beelined towards them and the shore while they stood in waist deep water with their boards. The sharks mouth was just rapidly opening and closing like one of those wind up sets of false teeth. The boys separated and put their hands on either side of it's body and held it on a 90 degree angle to the beach as they made the final steps to the safety of the sand.
Hazey was rushed to Ceduna hospital and then flown to Adelaide for micro surgery on his shredded arms.
Steve ended up receiving a bravery award and they both sold their story to 60 minutes and made $50,000 each out of it!
It was quite a story!

World breaking research has now got a vaccine for shark attacks.
Do NOT, i repeat DO NOT enter the water without it, the sharks will hunt you down.

Bondi lifeguards will be mandated to have this and you wont be able to fly Qantas.

Don't be selfish, protect your community.

Once vaccinated you can still get attacked, but you'll die slower. This means it's working.

hahaha. Very good Burleigh.

Assuming there is no scent and limited electro sensor transmission through the Perspex, was probably attacking just on sight. And if the object is the right size and making the right movements it will have a crack.

If the East Coast had some resident Orca’s it might balance the shark population out. Wonder if the Orcas that were once resident on the South Coast ever enjoyed shark liver.

Seems to have been very quiet on the Noah front this winter.....any recent sightings / close calls?
I know we aren't out of whale migration season quite just yet, but I can't help but feel like this winter it's very quiet on the sightings / close encounters front.......I also wonder if the warmer than usual water temps have played a part in that too.......

Cray boats on mid north west coast have had heaps of bulls and bronzies trailing as usual but surf wise the devil winds have been kicking in all winter so i dont think anyone has been surfing so no encounters as far as i know.I heard down south west and south coast has been good surf wise and they usually get more whites.

I haven’t seen a single pointer yet this year. Granted I’ve been out of the water a lot and the water has been mostly dirty, still I’ve spent a bit of time on my pointer-spotting eyrie and nary a one.

Touch wood this doesn’t come back to bite me on the arse….literally.

Didn't feel too bad up the coast a couple of weeks ago. Water was a bit murky still and in one spot brown so that kept me thinking the whites were further out to sea in the clear blue. Not sure if that holds weight?

As soon as it did go blue inshore there were a few bait balls close to me getting attacked.

Funny, I feel more sketchy now up north than I do back in the west of South Aus.

The brown fresh often sits on top of green or even beautiful blue currents. I’ve caught Wahoo in nearshore waters which look more likely to hold mudskippers than Clearwater hunting oceanic pelagics. You never know what’s lurking below…

Flooding and swell events have made a notable impact on a lot of annual east coast fish migrations this year. I imagine that has had some effect on the numbers of whites hanging inshore.

Great white sharks are thought to be common off the coast of Cape Town, but after a pod of orcas (Orcinus orca), which are known to prey on sharks, migrated into the region in 2017, white shark sightings became rare.
“We don’t know how often orcas kill white sharks, but when they do, they seem to have a preference for the oily liver and leave the rest. As of 2021, however, white sharks appear to have migrated east, and more are now seen along South Africa’s Wild Coast,” Bowling said. As a result, three shark bites were reported for the country in 2021, one of which was fatal.

The dude that got hit in Albany actually told me not to go surfing a very remote spot up the coast a few weeks ago as him and his mate had seen a massive shark just before they were about to go for a dive. Recognised him on the news. I owe him one and stoked to see he got away with his life. Classic south coast groms.

Yeah SF, lots of sharks around here any fisherman with a boat, spear-fisherman or cray worker will see plenty of sharks, usually not that big though.
Saw Ry the other day when i was getting a six pack of killkenny's. He's a lad, one of the friendliest good surfers you could meet.
Filmed him a lot but footage was taken down due to music copyright.
Also i don't film any more, was worried it attracted Perth surfers here while they should go south with more options available. Only a couple of good waves here that don't break well often with wind not often cooperating, so locals should surf them without tourists hassling too much.
My footage was just adding to the crowd problem while there's already lots of good or better surfers who live here.

Haha met a guy like that once in Lampung. Lived in an old broken down bus in NZ Taranaki.
He was into karmic energy, while we were playing poker and believed he could sense what cards everyone had etc..Complete BS in my opinion but friendly bloke.

On a day with monsoon winds we went exploring far away from camp and we found a spot hardly anyone ever surfed and thought maybe it will be good when so and so is good and a different tide.
The NZ hippy guru thought he could sense snakes in the area and we saw a local walk past with a shotgun, either for snakes or maybe wild boar.

Next day those conditions came and he was out surfing 2ft sloppy conditions at the wave out front.
I left and another bloke wanted a lift with me. I'd sworn i wouldn't go with anyone else and also i thought the guy might be gay so said no.
Anyway the surf was 3-5 foot and smoking at the break and decided to call it shotguns as i didn't know the local name.Total swell magnet. Only problem was backwash, if you went second or later sets rather than first wave of set..
That's the thing with Lampung spots, always a little problem with almost every break i surfed, either don't get swell 28 days a month, burgery ,sectiony 80% of the time or rocks sticking out near the end sections.Something.
Still even though it's a long way from the towns and ATM's and markets i would like to build a shack in front of that spot..
Just a bit sketch with how many Turtles are swimming around...There are a lot of massive Tiger sharks in Lampung compared to most of Indo.

That fat tiger looks pretty relaxed. I've got spearo mates that wouldn't be bothered by that thing given its cruisy attitude. Not saying I'd get in the water with it myself, I'm not as experienced or as comfortable in those situations as some of the blokes I know. But plenty of divers do deal with those fuckers regularly.
They love raiding crabs and crab bait from traps and parking under your boat waiting to steal a hooked fish. Lazy pricks.

This freeloader from QLD hammers some spanner crabs and mangles a bit of gear. (shark is about 4min in)

I've had a handful of shark encounters. I grew up in Southern California. The surfing at Dog & Sunset beach don't really have a surf, but I would paddle out and watch the sharks below me that were usually in pretty big numbers, most likely hunting the rays that loved to hang out there. Had a few encounters there with some fairly large bulls, but they seemed more curious than anything. Felt quite peaceful really.

My more scarier experiences were down south at Laguna and Corona beaches. I was fairly new to surfing and would paddle pretty far out there so I wouldn't be in the way to the other surfers and would wait for my turn to take a wave. I always felt fine when a group would let me join in so I wasn't just bobbing out there alone. Would see dolphins and seals from time to time too. But it was always when I was out there by myself, pretty far off from other groups that I would have problems. Been bumped by a few large sharks, 9ft+ and would just pull my legs out of the water and they'll swim off.

It was one of these times that I was sitting alone, wasn't expecting a go at a wave for awhile when a group not far from me started screaming for me to take the incoming wave. I frantically paddled to catch it and as I started riding it I got bulldozed by something huge. After getting out of that mess and on top of my board again, I assumed that I might had ran into someone and was looking to see if they were hurt as the group paddled to me. No one said shark, but they were pretty upset and were screaming at me to stay in the group as we paddled down the beach from that area where more surfers were hanging out.

It was when we got there that I realized my leg was paining something awful, a found a huge scab running down it. The group started sharing the story with everyone. Apparently a 18 foot+ GW had approached the group and wandered off in my direction. Hence why they started screaming for me to take the wave. They didn't want to freak me out by screaming shark. After that they saw the shark just cruising the wave with me and it;s when it decided that it was over it and turned out that I got rammed.

It was pretty much the same for everyone out there. We've been seeing them a lot recently, that one was the biggest. But for the most part, everyone believed that they were just being curious. I was pretty young at the time (this was back in the later 90s) and even said with all the splashing I was doing to catch that wave, if it was looking to hunt it would had nagged me for sure. A few days later a boat a few hundred meters from my run in got some pictures of a GW ~20ft long.

Most definitely have a huge appreciation and fear of them hahahaha. I have dreams all the time of being in the water with them, but never attacked. They just swim by. I do feel safe with a board being out there when I was surfing, but feel that people who swim that far out to just swim are really taking their chances. Especially after how many times I've been bummed, without that board between us, might had spelt trouble for sure.

Wow! Yeah I get to deal with lions, bears, and wolves here now in the Rockies. Have zero experience with crocodiles! Amateur wildlife specialist.... is that video fake? Want to say predators, including Crocs want to stash their food, not showcase it. And if it is real that's brutal for the family. Half way saying its fake and not making comments about it in case its real, be not nice for family to hear.
