Actually I've had a pretty good go at eradicating cane toads from the 5 acres I live on.

For the first time in a few years this Spring I heard native frogs returning to the creek bed and low country.
Eastern Dwarf Tree frogs, rocket frogs and even a northern banjo frog.

Made life uncomfortable for foxes and do my best to discourage cats from hunting here.

Lots of ground birds now: Eastern rosellas, buff banded rails etc etc small insectivorous birds.
Lizards galore.

Any demarcation between species that deserve to live in Australia and those that don’t is based on human desire and aesthetics of the environment.....notthat there’s anything wrong with that.

I hate the idea of cats roaming the scrub hoovering up native animals, but theyre existence there is no less valid than any other animal. Introduction by the hand of man is no less valid than a bird shitting out the seed of a new species of plant.

I’d rather more feral cats than introduce more humans through greed driven economics. Cats have less impact on the local environment.

Personally speaking , as opposed to philosophical abstraction , I think ALL foreign animal species should be banned for ANY reason.

Zoos disgust me and even the keeping of pets rubs me up the wrong way a lot of times. Sure , people love their pets , but keeping a fish in a tank , a cat stuck inside a house or a dog locked in a yard for 90 percent of its life is nothing less than imprisonment and slavery....man.

I don't buy that line of argument at all @Blowin, you sure its not just all a philosophical abstraction for you?

what if you take three stray cats, give them the best of vet care, spey them and keep them in your house with warm, comfy surrounds? or, you pick up a starving dog and do the same and that dog becomes your morning and evening walking companion and at night takes up way too much space on the couch?

or you get a dog from a puppy mill that's at the end of her money making life, giving her more love in a day than she's had in her sad little lifetime?

it's not the animals man, it's the fucking humans.

Back in the early 80's on surfing missions down south, a mate & I used to camp at the Yallingup tip (green waste section). We were young and he owned a crossbow. Late at night, comfortably stoned, we would hunt feral cats. It was hardly fair, there were literally 100's of them, some of them very scary looking, fukn big, with long hooked teeth. The destruction to the local native wildlife these things must of caused (and still do) would be untold. Feral pests have got to go, cats included. Unless you prefer feral cats to native birds, lizards, snakes etc etc etc...…...

Above in this forum I mentioned peoples poor behaviour in an internationally significant chain of wetland reserves.

Today ........

One series of lakes connect upstream to a major network of waterways and at the other end it flows into the sea. The bottom lake is tidal.

Between the bottom tidal lake and the next upper lake the National Park service have installed a fish ladder to allow fish to travel up and down stream. Today it was low tide so water was flowing down the fish ladder from the upper lake to the bottom tidal lake.

Usually under these tidal flow conditions pelicans gather on the lower lake at the fish ladder and feast on the fish coming down stream. Not today. Some dickhead had netted the fish ladder and when I saw him had 1/3 of a large esky full of fish 2" - 3" long!!!!

Before calling him out and getting him to return the fish to the water I video him in action and took photos of him, his car and its rego and sent them all by text to Fisheries. The dickhead is going to get a massive fine.

It's these sorts of events that inform my view that the heavy hand of the law needs to enforce the protection of the environment.

In the ongoing war for air supremecy above our block ....
Kookaburras are chased relentlessly by the noisy and Indian mynas but left alone by the magpies and butcher birds.
The magpies and butcher birds have an alliance to share food and to attack the Indian mynas at every opportunity. The adult male magpie is back to his cantankerous self taking every opportunity to harass the Indian mynas. Good lad.
The noisy mynas have moved on until the bottlebrushes flower.
Meanwhile the pigeons, bell minors, wrens, fantails, honeyeaters big and small, parrots and owls fleetingly come onto the block for water.

I’m not a fan of killing a feral animal because it doesn’t have an invite to the party , but I can say that I’ve got it on very good authority that those bastard Myna’s don’t enjoy being pelted with rocks till they find somewhere else to humbug every other bird.

Sounds like you’re in an epic spot , Guy.

I live next to the bush too , Guy Smiley. The shifting hierarchy with the native birds is fun to watch . Post nesting season in my area usually means some nasty battles with the in laws . The young ones can't interbreed so pairings with the neighbours will often test boundaries .Most notably with the kookaburra's,, because they express their disdain quite vocally , but sooner or later they reach an agreement and life goes on.
The kookies here run the show ,, they often take shit up to a point , but then when it goes too far they can get quite nasty to other birds.

Re toads. If you are in NNSW biozone re toads and you have a dam or body of water. Prevent toad access. Use vegetation. Sedges and rushes. Knee high fence eg sediment traps. Stop or slow their access to water. Killing toads gets boring after a while.

bonza - you are again so uninformed , Why don't we spend millions every year ( like the money spent on Sea Slugs ) doing what you suggest for no result ??????
Crazy ! Rushes and knee high fences will not stop a cane toad and you should know that . I am all for planting native vegetation for native animals habitat but not for toads !

Have you gone bonkers ?????

You have lowered your credibility to a level that no one will listen to anything you post .

Please retract after giving your suggestion a second thought .

Killing toads is NEVER boring .

Agree with Zenagain that its humans mistakes.

and add thinking we humans own and rule earth and animals were put here by god, animals were put here for us to eat, by some invisible man living in the sky, so any animal we like can become our pet, food on a plate or working and loaded up full of resources and kilos of goods so we don't have to carry them ourselves.

Animals make our jobs easier so yep lets all act like its ok to treat animals like slaves, food, pets and entertainment just because we all believe in fairy tales of some "God" and many hypocritical books that don't show evidence of said god but you must believe in or burn in hell forever.

It is religion that made people believe humans are number 1. A lot of religious people with some exceptions are bad with empathy for animals. Just a personal view i may be proven wrong about.
Some i know kill possums. One who does such things is a successful owner of a tool and power tool rental company, he rents possum traps and recommends killing drowning any possums caught. I really don't think the guy is joking.
I trained a local possum in my old hometown from being a wild scared of human life animal eating any veggies in my backyard to it breaking into my lounge room through any open window or door and licking my toes to tell me its time for his food.
Later on my sister came home from around 7 years in the UK. she stayed late and witnessed the same possum typing random letters on my computer keyboard copying my actions, probably thinking the computer produces food!
Or maybe the possum thought i was some possum lord, and mimicked my actions, i dont know but they are not animals that should be killed.
Cute, full of personality and lovely as any dog imo.

Once about 8 years ago was camping solo in the north west of aus and waiting for about 2 months for a place to be approved for rental, as my apartment..Every time i left my camp site for food or job interviews or rental interviews, feral cats and a few mice sometimes would eat into one of my two camping tents and get stuck into my noodles or bread bags. Not my tinned food just plastic wrapped.

The feral cats were the most disgusting looking feral animals i had ever seen. Hair missing, balding in patches (i don't know why) scabs all over bald spots and multi coloured hair of no real describable fashion i could write about but just damn ugly..Uglier than the mexican guy on "The good the bad and the ugly".
I would have had no remorse if i had the chance to put one out of misery, but realized i was really just about to please my own self's satisfaction and irritations of putting up with these feral cats and mice breaking into my tents and campsite full of over a months supply of food.

To the cats and mice they were just seeing a mirage like in loony toons cartoons, -somewhere in the desert a pile of food, water and shelter.
To humans a pest and probably ex pet that some dickhead or bitchy women threw away in the desert because she didn't get a long with it or it scratched a mark in her sofa etc.

That said if it comes between Australian native animals, birds and introduced animals and ferals, and Human race is to decide the outcome, we really have to choose native animals and possibly punish people more seriously for losing animals, going away on holidays overseas and not caring for animals in home in Aust or without care takers etc.
One room mate i had, his dog would run away if no one was home for over 4 hours.Would not come back and always found in the pound.

Could be a good career for some, looking after holiday peoples animals and houses by people who have no home,or family- they care feed and have empathy for animals, look after the home of homeowners property and pets.Keep burglars away too.
This could be done anywhere on earth on stints at each home taking turns as long as the homeowner pays ok, provides a room for carer/pet walker/food provider etc.
Just an idea.

PS cane toads must die.The shitty golf shot/swing practice objects that they are. As much as introducing them was human error, and they do feel pain as far as i know.

I said this on the Shark page .
We are the Apex Predator .
Always have been since the dinosaurs , I think .
Or guns ?

We shouldn't take unnecessary risks imo.
Animals love us looking after them .
Look how many move into our homes and cities .
Not many milk cows run away , for long :)

Any dangerous or problem animal , be it rat , dog , cat , rabbit , koala , croc or shark should be immediately shot ( not by me ) , eaten ( rabbit is nice ) and/or worn ( I wear leather ) .
Especially , non locals !
