it's beyond insanity
It's wild isn't it.
Net immigration of 379,800 in the year to September 2024 and a net figure of 548,000 in the year before that with a growth rate that's close to the highest in the developed world.
The ANU 2024 national environment scorecard states that ‘New developments to accommodate Australia’s rapidly growing population pose a particular threat to local ecosystems and species, especially along the east coast.’
The question I often wonder is, what is all this growth for?
Population growth as we know it exists to prop up GDP - as I've said before we'd have been in a recession multiple times over the past few decades without high levels of population growth.
But at the same time, if wealth inequality, environmental degradation, climate change, spiralling energy costs and insecure employment is what we get for holding up GDP as a measure of wealth and progress, then what's the point?
Why are we supporting this neoliberal wet dream of a ponzi scheme driven by the fantasy of infinite growth?
By some measures, taking into account income inequality, CO2 emissions, water pollution and loss of biodiversity as negatives and the quality of education, the value of consumer goods lasting longer, and so on as positives, genuine progress peaked 40 years ago and it's all been smoke and mirrors ever since.
But here we are, backed into a corner by a bunch of rancid racist scumbags who have rendered us terrified to talk about such a fundamental issue.
And again, those that stand to exploit and gain from this whole economic structure are laughing there heads off.
If I was paranoid I might even suggest that these sub-human neo-nazi pricks are a false flag, a plant by pro-business neoliberal lobby groups to shut down any discussion even as a large majority are genuinely concerned about a "big Australia".

Pocock should be running the show.
He is what he said after last weekend.
“We need to be able to have a discussion about the key questions.
How big do we want Australia to be? How do we balance the skills we need with housing, health, environmental impacts and other key infrastructure?” he said.
“When governments fail to listen and plan, a vacuum opens up. This allows extremists - including white supremacists and neo-Nazis - to prey on people’s genuinely held concerns.”
Good man.

^ spot on
…kind of worrying to see even some army veterans (non nazis) being ok with the presence of the neo nazi speakers etc because they’re ’fighting for the same thing’ ?
Which is what ??
Is it the freedumb to publicly express complicity with ideology that aligns with the heinous remnants of our white australia policy or just feelings of helplessness and disenchantment at current government policy ?
The whole idea of wrapping yaself up in aussie flags and yelling ‘deport’ is just cringe, especially since the bulk of those flags were made in china or bangladesh (or omg indiaaaaaa haha).
Frustrated people are one thing - a whole mob of knobheads who are all descendants of immigrants protesting against immigration kinda shows that whatever ‘culture’ we are apparently protecting needs to be questioned…

Of course, Pocock is correct, but the issue of Population didn’t just happen on 31 August 2025.
It has been addressed in the Intergenerational Reports since 2002 and the Population Statements since 2020.
https://treasury.gov.au/intergenerational-report
https://population.gov.au/publications/statements
But it appears few bothered to take any notice and from 2013 to 2019, LNP governments did not even have a dedicated Minister for Housing.
Infrastructure planning needs a lead time of at least a decade. The trend for increasing immigration started around 2000, but no one paid any real attention to the infrastructure needed to cope with an increasing population. And now when the States are busy playing catch-up they are condemned for spending too much money.
It’s all too easy to point the finger at the current government, but the issue goes back over 20 years.
And as he points out the lack of a cohesive and progressive plan supported by both sides has just opened the door to all the agitating shit stirrers.
It's time people like Joyce, Canavan, Antic, Hanson, Roberts etc were all put in their place. They serve no useful purpose and are only an obstruction on the path to a healthy and prosperous future for all of us.

@Satman, I saw a plackard saying that they were marching to defend Australia's culture of tolerance, dignity and stoicism and our tradition of deep engagement with complex issues and our calm and moderate temperament, even while experiencing deep personal frustrations.
It was a rather large plackard, but I was 100% behind those holding it.

And right on cue, we have Antic demonstrating my point.

or not

@slippery as ever there, it’s one thing to wish for violence (you) and it’s another to want people to be able to defend themselves in the face of adversity.
I listened to a radio interview with an academic yesterday who is recognised as an expert on far right extremism; surprise surprise her house and car have been targeted after speaking about the nazi group in Victoria, nothing to see there @slippery?

lots to see actually
send the islanders, the keyeffers, and brucey bogans around?

Yes Salty, no way am I blaming present govt.
I would argue it would not even be a talking point if we had an lnp govt.
Seems like it's a dirty campaign by the Murdoch and other rw media having something to beat up on Labor.
Not saying it isn't an issue, housing, but no way would Murdoch and lnp start talking about taxing mineral wealth, stopping neg gearing, reforming tax breaks for investment properties, clean up dodgy developers etc.
Also as a side note, funny how the media were screaming antisemitism with pro peace marches over a couple of flags, yet are remarkably quiet when actual farkin neo nazis are marching.
Where were the Jewish lobby groups shouting their outrage. Didn't hear from Jillian Stegal????
Its upside down....

The American economy will do ok as will Europe….they will trade and muddle along…but they will no longer control the world order…..
That’s my point….the China conglomerate have the numbers to do what they like….the 10 country’s Brics group will simply outnumber the rest of the world by population alone….controlled by a new force and a new currency…..time will tell…
They aren’t doing all this for no reason…..and they have been thinking about it for a very long time.

I wanted to go a bit further with the working class theme.
When I studied, the Marxism we got at university was purely economic, and we carefully constructed writing after going through Marxist economic historians. Fast forward a decade or more, and the Marxism became cultural - oppressor/oppressed became based on gender, race, identity etc. No longer just Polanyi raging against the 'satanic mill.'
So I'm excited to see working class Australians getting together and out there under a nationalist banner - truly did not expect it as silence had prevailed for so long. There's a great undercurrent of anger there, and we can measure it in housing, homelessness, immigration numbers. Also note the movement doesn't have leadership yet, and the frustrations are being vented in a wide variety of ways. They seem to have rejected the Nazis.
Makes me wonder, if there are proletarian aspects to the protest, who then are today's bourgeoise whose actions support capital?
Found some really useful data relating to viewpoint of international student numbers and income/education:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/money/article-13779433/Migration-Watch-...
As of a year ago:
"The Compass Polling data of 1,015 respondents, commissioned by Migration Watch Australia, showed those on average incomes of $100,000 were more likely to favour hard caps on international student arrivals.
This included young men aged 25-34, earning $90,000 to $130,000 with a bachelor degree.
But women aged 35-44 with post-graduate degrees, earning $130,000 to $230,000 were opposed to capping international student numbers.
So were Labor-voting men in the same age group on a similarly high income.
Women earning more than $230,000 a year- among the top 2.3 per cent of income earners, were also opposed to caps on international student numbers.
Nine out of 10 online survey respondents this month agreed that fixing the housing crisis was more important than educating foreign students.
But postgraduates and high income earners were among the few groups who disagreed with that question.
Three quarters of respondents also wanted vocational education programs removed from international student visas."
So - response to the topic is income based. Just as we noted the electoral shifts between high-income inner city electorates and everywhere else. Most people are on 100K or less when incomes are viewed in distribution. We also noted with the Voice that about 2/3 of the population is not university educated while 1/3 is, and that voting on that topic skewed according to education.
Given all this, I think the expressed sentiment on the weekend will not go away, and will be heard from again and become more loudly voiced. There's just too many people in the group whose views are not being represented at all by the policies of any of the main parties.
Might be of interest to Andy-M - you've talked about the class aspects being displaced and ignored. Until now!

Australia's working-class should always rise up and make demands.. proud history, and we have learned from the past that no-one's gonna give the hungriest a free lunch. The cultural diversity in our working class is world-beating - some good studies by ACOSS (the Australian Council of Social Service). Reckon the marches were representative of Australia's culturally diverse working class? (as they should have been, were they to be considered truly a 'working class' uprising/voice/message) ?
Our working class uprisings were always a chance for Australians to overcome cultural differences to make demands for economic and social fairness. It's a big part of what makes us Aussie.

Working class movement?
That Canavan video posted yesterday by @vj? … that would have cost big time, same as the shit Hanson posts, production costs would be much higher than their parliamentary allowances … so who would be funding them?? Advance AU? Aunty Gina? Uncle Rupert? Hardly grass roots

With regards to high income influencing views on international students, similar to the Teals, I assume we're looking at a post-materialist influence.
If you've got every material thing you need I guess it's easy to say "no limits" to population.
Although for me this doesn't take into account environmental issues which you would think they're highly cognisant of, and ever-increasing pressure on services and infrastructure which surely affects everyone regardless of income.
As for class VJ, as I've always maintained, class issues haven't gone away, we've just been told they don't exist and it's incorrect to think about them in times that focus on sexism, racism, post-colonialism, gender issues, neuro-diversity etc etc etc.
I think that discussions about class have for quite a while been seen as unfashionable and too male-centric.
It's all so murky, this immigration/population growth discussion, I don't know how class comes into it, or if it does.
I feel you can be wealthy and value the natural environment and therefore be wary of more people.
Or you can be solidly working class and trying to run a business which would benefit from more people (maybe they've started a business which only works on the assumption of rapid growth and urban sprawl) and so be enthusiastically in favour of as many people as possible.
You'd have to say though that being an out-an-out racist seems to be the preserve of the working class.
Unless, that is, they're just the ones who don't mind expressing it...
Surely Howard was tapping into a significant latent supply of racism and xenophobia that extended beyond the working class.
I'll have to give the class thing more thought.
