They could've had their country intact if they recognized the Ukrainians on the east wanted independence from Ukraine, but their stubbornness and hypocrisy of "only freedom for me, not for you" is what got them into this situation. Ukrainians literally fought for independence from Russia in the Maidan Revolution but they chose to negate that same freedom to eastern Ukrainians when they started to fight for independence from the west. Ukraine chose a civil war, and later they chose war with Russia. A war that they are doomed to lose yet they keep hearing and believing the lies of the west forcing them to keep fighting Russia for western interests. ‘
