SupaWallace escapades

Dandandan, Distracted.
Sulawesi is the most active tectonic region in the world. It’s constantly being accreted and divided.
Formed from several very large pieces, the island cops consistent tectonic pressure from all directions.
Nothofagus as we know evolved around 80mya in the late Cretaceous Period.
It’s dispersal after the break up of Gondwana left it in the the Australo/Papuan
( Australian Plate ) , formerly Sahul, Pacific Plate Oceanic regions in places such as Tasmania, Australian mainland, New Caledonia, NZ, Chile and Argentina
Early Miocene around 20 mya , a large promontory, the Sahul Spur which was a continuation of the Australian continental margin in New Guinea collided with the Nth Sulawesi volcanic arc.
Did Nothofagus make that journey, that’s the question?
Similarly, Eucalyptus deglupta made its way to Sulawesi, it’s assumed seed dispersal was via animals, water currents and or wind.
Did this occur in inter glacial or periods of glaciation approximately 18,000 years ago.
Eucalyptus urophylla on Timor also made its way north via natural processes.
I’d love to hear more about what others think of my photo.
Annually I visit the Otway Ranges to witness the Nothofagus change colour during their deciduous period, I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of what the leaf morphology looks like, but I stand to be corrected. Good stuff. AW

Well my second session today has ended my trip . The conditions were pretty awesome and first wave was going really good as I was getting the best barrel of the trip when disaster struck and I pulled a hamstring . On the third pump with my foot well forward I felt the board get pushed up from below and overstretched left hammy . I immediately knew I was done and made it to shore in agony . Limping up the beach I kept telling myself if I’m able to walk it can’t be that bad but after a few hours with voltaren gel , ice , elevated leg and codeine tablets I’m still in much pain . Sucks to be me but thems the breaks ( and strains ) Getting a credit on accommodation and coming back in October . They offered to refund my 1 month extension in full, such a nice authentic couple but I said a credit would be fine . Resting up until the 4th when AW heads back , I should be a bit more comfortable with travelling by then . I wasn’t the only one to get hurt today with one guy shredding his arm on the reef and another broke his nose after board smacked him in the face . AW had to help him in as his plug had pulled out of his board and was still attached to his leggie . It’s raining but still beautiful conditions and some nice barrels being had .

Bugger Supa. Hope it heals relatively quickly.

Shit. No good Supa.

Come one come all, or don’t come at all. Surfing was and is pumping.
Anyone interested in joining Australian Pensioners Insurance Surf Team ?
Current injury status: AW, perforated ear drum, (fortunately not hindering surfing) Supafreak has done a hammy, ( definitely hindered surfing, out for a few weeks).
We’re not old at all, others think we are. AW

^ this is awesome (well, everything but the injuries)
…rest up supa & AW hoping the ear goes all good
Safe travels for the near future u spring chicken good lookin roosters ;)

Tearymasseuse. Hi mate.
Well there’s definitely been a morning cock-a-doodle- do today. Sublime conditions.
Don’t know about good looking roosters, more like two torn up bantams that have just fought the islands ‘Fighting Hirado’ chook. All part of the fun. It’s time to get wet again. AW

I’ve had a pretty good run considering how much surfing I’ve done since arriving back in indo full time December 2023 . Turned 64 last week and dropped 14 kg this year . Stretch every morning around 4.30 am out of necessity , if I don’t my glutes give me hell . Here I was making sure my hammy’s are stretched every day before a surf but when fate steps in what can ya do ?

^^ bugger

Bummer supa.
Cepat sembuh....

Sorry to hear that @Supa, hammy tears hurt too, but heal no worries. You'll be back charging and repping for us old boys in no time. @AW will look after you I'm sure of that.
Last time I did one was in bed FFS so at least you were getting barrelled at HT's.
Just realised I'm about a month your senior.
64 is just a number. I'm still mid 20's, or maybe mid 30's in my head, (just gotta convince the rest of me, and avoid mirrors).
(Edit. maybe mid 40's.)

Shit Bugger SF, I've got one to add to yours and AW tally, after an average run at Kandooma, evening session yesterday, sliced the top of my foot open with fin just missing the tendon running to the big toe and ended up with six stitches. I'm flying back Aust this Friday. The cheapest thing I've had on the island is the Dr, $45 USD for injections, cleaning, stitches, tetanus shot, antibiotics and panadeine. Also includes daily dressing changes. Could have been worse. What's that great movie, No Place for Old Men haha

you know your own injury best.. but i was struggling with hamstring issues for a bit couple years ago. I did alot of stretching and was always super flexible.
Once i got onto the program of strengthening my hammys as opposed to stretching ive barely had a problem since. So, nordic hamstring curls.. romanian deadlifts, then the hamstring curl machine at the gym. these have helped me hugely.

@nomad 1 , thanks for those tips , I will definitely look them up , anything to keep the old bod going, I’m not looking forward to time out of the water after surfing nearly every day for 18 months . @seaslug , that last line had me & AW cackling. Laughter is always the best medicine .

^ Laughter is always the best medicine .
(exercise / hammy strengthening tutorial begins at 4 min mark)

Bit smaller today and conditions not as perfect but still pretty good & overhead. 5 boats yesterday and crowd peaked at about 40 at one time . No boats this morning……yet . Didn’t take any photos as was just laying back with leg elevated and raining most of the day . Leg feels much better today but will be a few weeks before back in the water and I’m not going to rush it . Leaving boards here and will fly over from Padang as they have twice weekly flights but can’t bring boards, only 5 kg luggage. Wings canned the route and air Susi is about $45 which is good as it’s 40 minutes not 3.5 hours on ferry.

basesix wrote:bugger, fellers, sorry about the ear and hammy, keep posting about your recoveries.. even the injury stories, and @stu's boardless beat-down tale are instructive.. good reminder to us not to be cavalier about the dangers, and our water fitness, real shit can happen, especially as we get older.
Basesix. Hi mate, hope you are well.
Are you saying ‘no waves for older men’ ?
Had a surf earlier. Still great conditions, fucking sea lice moved in big time, everyone including me scratching like a dog on its bed that’s never been washed. AW

Enjoying your pics AW. Long flange, Buttress roots, have you come across any Clitoria flowers, nipple fruit or cockhold herbs? Sounds like you got hold of some cheap Viagra to me. The lady boys must be looking better every day. Cheers.

Old-Dog. Hi mate, you make me laugh, you’re always up and about.
Well, you must have missed the Only Males arousal page some pages back.
So that you stand erect and offer your calmest attention in an otherwise sticky situation, I present you with these two beauties for your afternoon delight.
Clitoria ternatea and Centrosema pubescens. You may need a quiet dark room away from others for your own personal pleasure.
No lady boys here at all fortunately , lady birds a plenty.AW

Looking at this shows that AW & myself have gotten off lightly , admittedly we don’t charge the big stuff like Soli . Sometimes though it’s the small days when you get injured .

Yes @supa, yes its been the smaller days off the mid sized days (never L or XL for me) where I've been hurt the most - teeth, fin chops, ribs, back issues: loving the perspective you two are showing, cheers and thanks for your updates. Positive vibes great stuff.
cos, y'know.. we're curious.
PB & J, or 'the original odd couple'.
either way, stay social boys.
