Guto Amorin // Kandui - video

You've gotta admire a guy that applies himself to his work. Take for example Guto Amorin who's the surf guide at Kandui Resort and applies himself dutifully by showing the guests how to ride the wave. And once isn't enough! This vid was filmed over two days in June with ol' Guto providing multiple instructions.

Considering the effort involved, one can only hope that Guto was duly remunerated for his diligence.

How can one man get so many barrels in two days???

Not to mention riding a short, flat and rather inappropriate board

Glad you picked up on the board too GF. I was wondering if Craig Anderson had set some inconvenient Kandui trend all those years ago...

For me, that's a classic. Many possible photos from this one. The many different components that make it up. You have got to get the feeling looking at this one.

Yeah I found myself thinking someone please give this guy a good pintailed tube riding machine...
But sick vid anyway

That bloke just got more barrels in 2 days than all of us will get all year and people are offering him board advice? I think he paddled into all of those waves (bar maybe 1 or 2) pretty easily with his shorter equipment and was weaving the little board nicely in the barrel.

To be honest I couldn't care less what board he's riding...
But there's just something nice about seeing boards that are made for riding tubes, in the waves they're designed for, imho.

And yep I totally agree, the amount of pits ridden in that clip was ludicrous. As noted in my first comment

Awesome waves and awesome surfing. Not a comment on Guto (don't know him, never heard of him and have no basis to make judgements) but in general, should a surf guide be sitting way inside taking the waves of his/her paying clients and leaving them the scraps, or sitting in the line up, showing them where to position and calling them into waves, and taking a few for themselves? Not sour grapes - never been to Kandui, and maybe Guto was doing the latter :)

Great guy to surf with...and drink beer with as well ,spent some time in Oz in his early years ...does a fairly hilarious impression of most aussie surfers after a beer or 2 and is a pretty fucking good surfer and all round good bloke ....
And no ..sitting on the shoulder at kandui isn't really an option and if you haven't got the smarts to work out where to sit out there ..then you should reconsider your decision to enter the water at that break ...

boring after a few waves, (filth waves though), boring watching 1 guy going straight, board so short that he cant do bottom turns and slash under the lips, they should have shown a few of the other 50 or so guys surf

Soundtrack took me back to the 70's, to think Nick Drake died about 45 years ago but his music will live on forever.

Backlit Kandui is a thing of beauty! Great music, good tube riding, nice vibe.
And yes, he easily got more barrels in those two days than I do in a year - eeeeeasily.

Kandui makes all the waves in Bali look fat and lame, should have gone searching back in 86 when i was in Nias hey, would have been a pretty serious trip on water back in those days though........Giddyup !!

Shorter boards are better at Kandui as the wave is so fast and sucky; these long pintails get stuck. Its the fastest, most difficult and most dangerous wave in Indo. Bottom turns are not an option- which you would know if you had surfed it. I have surfed with Guto and he helps the whole line up get waves and makes sure everybody is safe. However, these days there were only a handful of guys out and 95% of the surfers don't want the sets. Despite the perfect look on the videos, being out there is a different story and even the pros get seriously injured. Btw there was no towing those days, Guto paddled into all the waves on his own- on his short flat little 5.9 magic board. Good luck out there on your 6.8 pintails, will be seeing you going over the falls, if you have the balls to take off at all :)
