First Love - The Film

When it comes to the modern surf film you would be forgiven for thinking there are only two types on offer: the company-produced flicks cover-mounted on the monthly magazines, or earnest tales from folk who ride alternative craft.

First Love, a soon-to-be released independently produced film, appears to defy these trends. It's more about telling a story and, as such, not about moving inventory or inventing a movement. Shot in documentary style it follows the journey of three young surfers - Jess Laing, Nikki van Dijk and India Payne, all from Philip Island - as they strive to succeed in the sport they love.

The three girls are similar in age, and live close to each other, yet various fates have them following different paths to realise success in surfing. The paths all lead to the same place though; Hawaii and the huge waves of the North Shore.

There's a certain symmetry to First Love. As the film follows the stories of three young women so is their story told by three young women: Claire Gorman, Clare Plueckhahn and Fran Derham have combined their talents to independently produce the film.

Of the film, 23 year old Gorman, First Love director says: "To have had the opportunity to follow local talent across the globe has helped us produce an exceptional film which will inspire all viewers. The girls are inspirational in chasing their dream"

First Love will be launched to the public at Torquay Surf Museum on Sunday April 4th at 8pm. Subsequent dates are: Tuesday April 6 Torquay Surf World 6pm and 8pm Friday April 9 Banfields Cinema, Phillip Island 7.30 Tuesday April 27 ACMI Cinema Melbourne 7.30
