The east coast is a versatile stretch of coastline. Southerly is the predominant swell direction yet when the lines swing to the east and north the options stay wide open.

Since the New Year the Sunshine Coast has been copping a bit of swell. Nothing sizey mind you, but 2-4 feet of tradewind swell has kept everyone busy.

It is an unfortunate fact that the majority of Australian surfers live on the eastern seaboard yet it's the south and west coasts of our country that get the best waves.

Scott Butcher often distorts the dimensions of waves with his photos. Shot without clear reference points to gauge their height the eye plays tricks when estimating the size and imagination takes over.

Ten seasons spent on the north shore makes him a big-wave veteran and puts him in good stead for when the wave models turn purple.

I don't think I need to name the wave - those who know it will know it, while those who don't shouldn't be given any further encouragement.
