They're rising up all over the Mentawai chain. Land camps, that is. And with mod-cons and speedboat access they're challenging the tourist tugs for the white fella's dollar.

Recently Adam Melling stayed at Aloita Resort in the central Mentwais with photographer Craig Parry. As boat owners duelled over limited moorings Mello and Parry surfed a heap of waves within strike range of Aloita: Telescopes, Scarecrows, Icelands, HT’s and Lances Left. There's plenty more too in the Playgrounds region.
