With the early morning sun still hidden behind Scar Reef's imposing red bluff the occupants of the Captain Coconut, including Australian Chris Lovell, bailed over the side. Moored at the end of the channel it was a 200 metre paddle - 200 metre sprint paddle - to the takeoff.

Located up the strait between Sumbawa and Lombok, Scar Reef needs a bit of swell to get going. On this morning it was four to five feet and lining up beautifully, with only Chris and his fellow surfers for company.
