        Kandooma

Kandooma is a surf resort in the Maldives, just a 45-minute speedboat ride from the capital, Male. Kandooma's surf guide is Sydney surfer, Jeremy Wilmotte, who happens to be quite handy with a camera and pen. The following words and images are by Jeremy and document a couple of swells earlier this month:

"We had two successive swells in the first fortnight of June, the second being slightly larger than the first. Yesterday morning we saw perfect barrels out at Kandooma rights yet again. It has to be one of the best waves around and its at our doorstep. In the afternoon we jumped on the boat and went searching further north. Unfortunately the weather has been unpredictable lately so when we got to Tucky Joes the wind had swung around more to onshore and increased in strength. Everyone paddled out though and got super fun lefts in the 3-4 ft range. As quickly as it arrived the storm passed and the wind changed back to offshore making all the difference to the wave quality. The back half of the surf was perfect with plenty of tubes and clean open faces for turns.

During the smaller days we often went to Riptides. Generally speaking it's slightly bigger as the wave has a wedge to it. Also, the plankton has arrived which means Manta Ray season has begun and Riptides is renowned for them. The first day we saw them was incredible. There would of been at least 15 rays swimming around us, and curious as they are the best thing to do is staying still and calm. If you do this they will come right up to you. A few times the Mantas actually got so close I could have touched them. The largest Mantas we saw were about two metres wide."
