Here are some photos that appear to have all the evil elements in place: dark water, grey foreboding clouds and heaving misshapen barrels. I asked photographer Kerry Down about the session and he said it was every bit as heavy as it looks. "This swell popped up and it was really overcast and raining on and off. It got bigger and bigger throughout the session and the tide just got lower and lower so there was more carnage. It was one of my more memorable sessions."

Kerry usually appears in front of the lens but an injury kept him off the board and prompted him to swim out and grab these photos. Despite not surfing he still found a way to get involved with the wave, "I even went over the falls a few times trying to hang in there for too long."

The surfers are Jughead, Rodent, Mikey Brennan and Karl Attkins.
