Round 1 of the Bells Beach Pro is done and it's hard to find a clear narrative with a bunch of loose threads waiting to be pulled. Most of the experienced heads won excepting Slater who had a shocker, the rookies aren't enjoying the rout they did at Snapper, and the general approach to the wave is still some weird hybrid of classique rail and cotton-footed airs.

Nevertheless the individual surfing was red hot and Alen Zvokelj shot the best of the round.
