Wow.

At first glance it doesn't look like a KSWC installation. I can't recall any public announcement either (and, they've been announcing new locations well before they get to test mode).

China became a member of the Patent Cooperation Treaty in 1994 (there are 151 signatory countries) but I don't know how this is enforced.

But considering the lengths that the WSL went to in Australia to have "Kellogg's Nutri-Grain World Surf League" trademark removed (due to non-use - we detailed this in The ASP: It's on but who's watching? - Part 3), I'd be surprised if they hadn't anticipated and prepared for just such a scenario.

But, wowzers nonetheless.

ojackojacko i'll share what I know on 1960/70's Gold Coast Wavepool tech.
I wish to credit fellow junior surf competitor Chris Gudenswager for the better half.

Gold Coast / OZ surfers wanted in on 1960's wavepool revolution.(Japan / US)
More to the point they were losing advantage with No wavepools on Oz horizon.
I'm only guessing Keith may have been a representative by default to suss scene.
Just as today the wave pool bug got a hold of them no differently.

1968 GC surfer Keith Paul toured Tempe Arizona at the lay out stage.
This inspired Keith on return to draw up his own Wavepool Plans.
Keith invited fellow innovator Peter Drouyn to apply his modern contest format.
We know Peter had caught the Wavepool design bug, ever fine tuning his designs.

Chris generously allows a shared photo of Keith pacing out the wavepool in 1968
https://deskgram.net/explore/tags/keithpaullstory
Chris alludes to this pair's architecture playing out in Today's WSL wavepool arena.

1970 Peter Drouyn was #1GC Sportstar #1Qld Sportstar #1 World Surfer.
Keith & Peter were leading innovators of surfing & Mad keen Wavepool designers.
Note: Peter was also invited to compete & then also win Wave Pool Comps

Nobody could doubt Peter was at the forefront of Wavepool surfing & Designs.
Together they inspected/designed/mastered Wavepools from a land that had none?
That incredible achievement married with Peters #1 Rank bosses history.(Surely)
Peter was ever #1 wavepool surfer designer until decades later stumbles Slater.

[disclaimer] tbb's twin sister ran Drouyn's shop during the late 1970's (Stubbies)
Most News links to Wave Generator are subscriber only.(tbb: re Tracks freelink)
Without doubt tbb's sister would know more of Wave Generator than most.

Clear to all that wave designers would gain a leg up by accessing Drouyn's Plans.
What's odd is two #1 tech Surfers sharing near everything 40-50 years apart.
Both inspired by very 1st US wave pool that only Keith {R.I.P} got to the bottom of.

Oz built 50 wavepools & the world 500 more & all work fine but none are Peters.
Only one is Peter's Wavepool...he can lead you to it & describe it back to front..
Coincidence that pool owner met & knows Peter back to front...Funny thing that.

tbb's main reason for contributing is not due to sister nor to put the record straight.
Simply because Peter asked fellow Gold Coasters to hold firm.
Pretty big thing to ask for town's support, we locals are obliged to stand together.

Again thank Chris for revealing another side to GC surfing...feel free to add a twist!

tbb is not taking anything away from Slater & acknowledges similar triumph.

Nice TBB - thanks. Interesting info in your post. From the small snippet in the keithpaullstory deskgram, it sounds like Keith was more across the pool design and Peter more across the comp design, but from your post it sounds like there was a lot more happening than that. It's a shame Tracks couldn't be bothered to interview anyone, attempt to dig up the expired patents (both of which should be pretty basic tasks for a professional journalist), or actually do anything apart from copying and pasting emails. Looks like Tracks is interested in stirring up shit, whereas TBB is interested in presenting the available facts.

FWIW Peter called me a few days before that story came out, claiming, as you've read in the Tracks article, about Slater stealng his IP. We had a long conversation, followed by a few emails, some including diagrams of his original wavepool design.

The story, to be honest, was more about Peter's broader struggle than anything Slater did or didn't do, and after seeking counsel from one of PD's friends I shelved it.

Drouyn may have been a visionary, though he wasn't the first to conceive of a wavepool, and his plans were coarse and abstract compared to the detailed patents of Webber and KSWC.

Thanx for reading crew & yes tbb joined dots but never to mislead.
ojackojacko is kind & tbb does build on the facts to flesh out a story but I'm no Stu!
Stu touches on "seeking counsel"..tbb likewise danced around this & that.

All can read synchronicity rules this story with way too much happenstance!

I would've liked to have included even more obvious storyline that speaks for itself.
Big Surf Wavepool that Keith visited was also most likely where Peter won comp.
This being the only 'surfers comp' wavepool of the time to fit Peter's victory.

The storyline just keeps writing all players larger than life. (tbb can't control that!)
The more I looked at Keith < >Drouyn < > Kelly the more the story ties in. (Not me!)
Drouyn wins Wavepool Comp so too Kelly wins Wavepool Comp...(repeats)
Drouyn changes Comp Format Kelly changes Comp format. (Let me outta here)

tbb is less likely to believe that it's even possible for them to dissociate.
We ain't halfway there on this Mystery Tour...perhaps Chris opened a can of worms.

Secondly think about Keith being 1968 #1 OZ Champ at time of visit...(choose!)
a) Did #1 Oz Surfer Keith fund his own magic mushroom dig around in US dirt?
b) SA Sponsor > Oz #1 Keith's US tour +Wavepool Port 'O'Call ('Check it out Keith')

tbb conspiracy... SA shuttled Keith into Big Surf crater

Top Secret microfilm/wavepool plans stashed inside board cover to Mission Control.

Bland bathymetry

truebluebasher's picture
truebluebasher's picture
truebluebasher Saturday, 13 Apr 2019 at 6:52pm

philosurphizing is right to highlight the downfall in Chinese design is bathymetry

China were closely observing Surf Lakes failed cheap arse thin Cement pour.
This highlighted the cost of a decent cement job was out of the Question.

Biggest ever wavepool needs cheap adjustable resource..1st choice bags of rice?
(Pause) tbb asks if any other affordable resource behaves in a similar manner.

Untested! Most would assume water mass pressing on lining over bags was fine.
Yes! But Wave train teased out the bags one by one peeping them out then rising up!
We all saw that on opening day with (rice bags!) banging against the wave Train.
Again saw the erratic wave nature of a bastardised bathymetry that went skewiff.

Sand is not cheap in China! Likely the sand was used as a secondary contour resource.
We see precise measured sand piles under and along wave train + sand scatters.

This picture sadly shows a depleted workforce on an over ambitious project.
No rain & just a dozen Chinese workers on Worlds largest Olympic aquatic venture.

Whole world clearly sees Surf Lakes & China pushing the envelope too far.
Notice both of these projects are in the middle of nowhere & chewing resources.

footnote: PT knew of Drouyns wavepool muse and as China's coach has last laugh.
No other wave pool photos? Pool maybe drained to sort floating bags & lining?

Also in this complex are some very impressive skate parks and some strange tall sculptural looking things which are actually artificial rock climbing walls, made by a

Skim vid @ [11:08] Ranch > Wonka's Nazis lasso & brand the Keen freestyle fucker.

Smaller concrete wavepools ban leggies large lined Wave lakes insist leggy!

Economy of scale drives cheaper choice every time.(We see it play out in Photo.)

1) Note solo workers couldn't possibly manhandle a HD roll alone.
2) Rolls in foreground are too thick to be empty or to thin for HD roll of plastic.
3) We can all see the length of a roll...(This is very cheap flimsy pool lining!)
4) All rolls are near equal length towards wave zone (No thicker rolls here?)

Go to Bunnings & throw a roll of HD plastic in your trolley...Wot! It's too heavy!

Photo shows Largest wave pool has least workers laying thinnest wavepool lining.
Seemingly the 'rice sacks!' may yet prove to be the least of their concerns.

The method of wave generation you see in the Chinese wavepool video is not fake.

I did an experiment where I made a small scale copy of the foil that you can clearly see on the right side of the of the train.
My foil is made of 3'' thick EPS foam and the shape was then cut out using a bandsaw, the curved cutout at the front is the important part.
I then made a wooden handle attached to the inside of the foil.
I then pushed the foil through water in my 'you beaut' wave tank.
A slow push didn't show much at all, but a quick, short push then stop, replicated the swell you see in the video which travels out ahead of the train and then breaks and peels on both sides of the wavepool.
The swell generated is the shape of a curve.
The swell I generated is also very small and would get even smaller as it travels down the wavepool.

There is no way possible that this particular foil shape could create a wave similar to Kellys.

Latest look @ ($38.6m AUD ) China's Olympic Wave Pool. (Phase 3)

Wave Pool 700m x 170m ( 3m high waves @ 8m per sec x 6-8 min intervals)

Now bigger the first hollow section is like 'The Ranch' but goes unsurfed
At the half way point the Wave starts to flatten out with rider short on speed.
They're yet to stoke up the left...be soon to take out longest Wave Pool ride title?
