Should I buy an SKX?
No idea ...but hang on to her
Machado Moonbeam looks fun.
Im not saying it's not a good design, but don't believe the hype on any board design, boards are just like music or movies or anything else.
What one person loves another might hate, buying a board based on hype is never a good idea, your expectations will rarely ever be met.
And I'm not a FW hater, i have many FW boards just because i like the durability (even if they look ugly and are associated with kooks), i don't think they go better or worse than other boards, just depend on the design and what clicks for the rider.
Local board? Queensland and you live in Narooma. Must be a few real local shapers who can shape you anything.
I also don't believe in the hype but I have a story.
I commented on how well Slater was surfing on one at Jbay last year.
Family overheard and got me a SKX for fathers day. I flipped at the $$$
anyway surfed tried a few different fins and the best (for me) was Julian
Wilson medium.
The board went good but very different to my epoxy Simon Anderson (Face
Dancer) which I preferred its much more refined feels faster and overall performs better. After my Hawaii stint (5 weeks) I cant get the Simon to
work at all and the SKX is really going well so they do work and performance is strong you just have to surf somehow differently.
PS: When the surf gets solid say 5-6ft I use JW large fins works a treat.
I think we as surfers often get in this notion of a magic board thing, while in reality i think although there are boards that are special over time as surfers we change, our fitness, our weight, body shape, mentally (a lot about surfing is in our heads) how we approach a wave etc.
So a board that we might have perceived as magic five years ago, if we ride it now (assuming we have changed) it might not go as it once did for us and a board that may not have worked for us before might actual now work quite well for us.
I think riding different boards can also change the perception of how re-riding old board can feel or go too.
Memla, I think he meant a local shaped him boards in the style of JS monsta.
totally agree ID.
I thought Slater was riding a Gamma at J-Bay last year.

Indo my facedancer is 12months old not 5years my SKX is
7months old so really nothing there. I rode the SKX for about
a month only but wasn't 100% on it went back to the Simon went
better for me straight away. Only change was 5 weeks not riding
either board. Now the SKX feels better
FR76 so my wonderful family got it wrong who fkn cares its about
a SKX which I have 1st hand experience with. That was the question.
evo i dont think freeride was having a dig at you
Off Topic - How good is it to see Boogs VdP running that C Pt pic from 20yrs ago.
@Evo yeah cool, i wasn't actually suggesting that was the case for you, it was more just a thought that i have bouncing around in my head for a while, so here was a good excuse to finally get it out :D
Udo Ha funny bugger old Boogs has been shoving that photo in my face
for 20years just to try me out we all have a dig at each other over it.
Its a great laugh between us. Believe me old bugger Boogs has surfed
bigger badder meaner amd hollower waves than that shore break.
My last few boards have been from local shapers, still in good condition and frequently surfed. My wife took me to a surf shop for my 30th and told me to pick any board I wanted.... I was too conflicted and couldn’t decide what to do.... I am just wanting to try something a little bit different to my usual short board (js monsta style 6’0) , SKX has some crazy stuff local shapers don’t really do (LFT tech and eco board construction) and pretty rad looking channels. Anyone surfed one and have any input? Im from narooma, south coast NSW and waves are 5ft and clean at best.... thoughts??? Should I believe the hype?
